60 acres native patcher

I have 60 acres of native patcher land with very few trees. I use it for bird hunting only.
I do have water rights for irragation of crops or live stock. This land has not been turned over or planted in 25+ years. So would it be worth leasing out for hay or ? I will not lease it for hunting.

It's in Texas just west of Galveston Tx at Halls Bayou
The water rights are for GCWA also there is a creek
that has water running throw it even with the drought this year .
Don't know what it is we call it goat weed with Burmuda grass.

If its doves... and you lease it for hay... if they are doing it right they will kill out the goat weed and fertilize the bermuda. That has the potential to put a major damper on your dove hunting. If you could find some one who wants to plant johnson grass, pearl millet or some thing of that nature for hay you will have it made in the shade. :nod:

Capt I ran and hunted Hall's bayou country for years, most of that country is full of salt grass.
I just don't see it producing quality hay with out a lot of money put into that gumbo land.
Dad was friends with old man LaCompe(sp) and I hunted over 10,000 acres of that country it is great for a Brimmer cow and rice farming and Skeeter's from HE!!. Better check close your water quality as salt water backs way Hall's Bayou.
Are you north or south of FM2004 , I have caught red's and speck's way north of the FM2004 bridge. Do you border Kiddo Tacquard's ranch?

I was told it was a old carpet grass farm. I do know that it's is fresh water. The water is not from
Halls. There is no salt grass on this place. I know that when you get
closer to the bay there is quite a bit.

If your on the north side of FM 2004 you can throw a rock and hit West Bay or Chocalate Bay. There is nothing between you and the bay but a three strand barb wire fence and two strands are down.
I know where you are at worked cows in that forsaken country, have seen cow's standing in the bay to escape the skeeter's. Most all of that country was in rice field at one time or another. John Mecom owned from Hwy 6 to Hall's on the south side of FM2004, he was an oil man that owned the Saint's at one time. His land has the old blimp base on it with all the old pill boxes. Kiddo Tacquard was on the north side. The LeCompte's riced farmed everything west to Danbury and Liverpool. That country is only good for skeeter's and duck's, Brimmers can survive there.
Besides saltgrass most of that grass is switchgrass, little bluestem, Indian grass great for Buffalo and Cow's if they can survive the skeeters.

Ive Duck hunted down there . I don't know if I could sleep at night knowing I left some cows for the skeeters to eat . The skeeters love yard guard and off .

I have been there before!! :) I think your history down there would be worth hereing. That is some wide open country bounded by

Are you off the FM that run's by the refiner's heading north toward's Chocolate Bayou going back to 35 towards Alvin.

Im on Fm2004 between Halls and Chocolate 1/4 mile passed Halls on the right hand side. If im coming from Galveston And 3 miles in.

I have shot alot of ducks and geese in your neck of the woods off of 2004. Alot of that area is native prairie. One of my hay sources was cutting and baling salt grass this year in that area to meet demand.

What eats salt grass,

I don't have salt grass but what I do have is goat weed- carpet grass- Bermuda. There was a farmer that was baling some grain or corn stock just down the road.
Geese man am I in the fly zone and the dove hunting is great there is a few hogs. I just put a contract on 106 ac right beside the 60 some day it may pay off.

Hay was so short this year that salt grass was being baled for cattle in those parts.

If I am not mistaken the Peltier family has most of the land in that area lease up for their cattle.
