The AR thread got me thinking ..... And it hurts :D . I've been thinking about adding a 308 to my safe for a long time, but I had never thought of a semi auto, only bolt action. I would like to look into a 308 semi, I don't want an assault rifle but would like to be able to buy an large capacity magizine for it if I wanted ....... For the day our country collapses.

Any suggestions on a make and model? Thanks.

Define assault rifle. Any rifle that has a magazine capacity greater than 5 could fit that description.

hook im guessing he means by the look of the gun.
What's "the look"? Synthetic stock. Collapsible or foldable?
The term assault rifle is something that sticks in my craw a bit

We've covered this let's no get off track, sky is right it's the appearance.

I have found that eating a bread product like a biscuit will help in removing said object from your craw.

I have never owned a BAR Alan but I think seriously that would fit the bill and be a good selection. Browning makes good bolt action rifles so I assume same goes for semi-auto. I don't know what magazine capacity you are looking for though.

Thanks hillbilly and sky and also thanks to hook for starting an AR thread and not letting this thread go a different direction. :tiphat: :tiphat:

There are lots of Remington model 740 and 742 around. They certainly can be found in 308. The standard they hold 4 in the magazine and 1 in the barrel. There are after market magazines available for them that will hold 10 rounds. They are not a minute of angle rifle but they are pretty reliable. And they are a whole lot less expensive then the vast majority of semi auto 308's.

My opinion the 742 is the worst rifle they ever made. They are unable to stay accurate. I have taken several in trade at my store, usually in 30/06 or 270.

I have a 740 that is accurate and reliable that does not hold true for them all, they have had a very spotty history.
Seems if you get a good one they are great and you better hold on to it. I do agree there do seem to be more crappy than good ones.

I didn't know such a animal existed, nice for hogs.
A great one would be a Belgium BAR in 308 with a twenty round clip. I've been looking for the old 20 rounds and haven't seen one since the 80's
Any of the BAR's with a twenty round clip would be a formidable weapon.

I have a 7600 that I bought in 81 or 82 I think. It's always held true. I have a junk scope on it I need to take off and put a good one on but I have to many with no scopes I need to put one on.
I'll start another thread about scopes so not to jack this one.

If money was not an option I would look at a Springfield M1A. Sharp rifle, and supposed to shoot good.

Good choice. This is on my short list. My very short short list.

If I was buying semi auto it'd be a current production BAR or a Belgium. That's is the "gun" in my area if you dog hunt. Not saying bad thing about the Remington but they have acquired the name jam-o-matics. I know some that have had good luck but I wouldn't buy one. I think keeping fresh mags in it and on the older ones, trimming the main spring by a coil or so will help.
