I have been feeding 2o%. I am not selling any time soon. Just breeding some heifers. Is the extra money on the higher protein a waste?

You should be able to feed less of the higher protein cube with the same result. Not sure my math is correct doing it off the top of my head here. For example 2 lbs/day of 16% cube should be about the same protein level in the overall ration as 1.6 lbs of the 20% cube. Plug in the cost per ton for each cube to figure what would the total cost be to feed X number of heifers at Y lbs per day.

Another thing I'm not sure of is that all protein is created equal. I'd probably stick with an all natural lower protein product if the higher protein involved urea or feather meal but that's just me

TB can probably give you a more intelligent answer ;-) I'm going back to bed now

Stay awake John. You're doing a good job. Without going into a bunch of calculations or knowing exactly how much protein and energy my cattle were getting from forage I'd err on the side of feeding the higher protein rather than saving a few cents and feeding the lower protein cube and shorting my cattle.

I did something similar last winter. I had my yearling bulls on very poor frosted grass but plenty of it and I fed them once daily a 16% grain custom mix at 1% bw which I fortified with canola meal to bring the protein up to 22%. They gained 1-1.5kg/day all through winter and I feel utilised the poor grazing very well.
