So, Here's What We've Been Up To

I think the canvas buildings aren't bad, if they are in a more protected area. I was quite surprised at what happened to ours, would have expected it to blow away. But for $6000 it was worth a try. We have built 2 calf shelters and are planning to build some panels for me to travel to horse...

    Weighing calves

Within 24 hours usually. When we tag, band and process them, which is done with the cow watching from the other side of the barn gate. Safer that way. And our cows are all quiet and used to being handled, but better safe than sorry.

Planning to add photos of that when we're done.

So, Here's What We've Been Up To

Last fall, we decided it was time to add another barn to the property. As we will calve out around 450 head (about half are custom cattle) our 32x56' barn just doesn't have the space we would like. When you're getting between 15 and 20 calves a day, and you get a couple of nasty weather days it...

what do quality cattle look like?

Here's some of what I consider our best cows, as in they raise a good to great calf every 365 days or so. Raised DD's 4H steer for this year DD's first calf heifer, raise a 700 lb calf AND bred back in the first cycle 10 years old in the picture, bred back for the first cycle. I think the...

Best ear tag for staying in?

Y-Tex are pretty good, it's what we use in all the cows. We rarely have to replace one.

New Calves and a Crazy Momma

She would be on the next trip to town around here, or perhaps we would let her raise this calf, but she wouldn't be around to raise another. As a general rule, they do get better as the calf gets older, however on the other side of that coin...they get worse to deal with every year, and if as a...

    Ralgro/heifers

We don't implant our potential replacement heifers. But I know at birth which heifers are likely to be kept and which are not. I just don't think that the added growth they get is worth the small chance that they won't breed, and that extra weight doesn't matter much unless we are selling them...

    Fence Crawlers

From my experience, fence crawlers are not curable. I love heifers off good, old reliable cows. There is a lot of proof that they will work out well, we have a couple of this one's sisters in the herd. They stay where they are put though. And this is part of the reason we have the milk...

    Fence Crawlers

It just socks when it is one off a good old cow, and one of the better looking heifers. We just got rid of one this fall that was the same way, only we kept her 2 years longer than we should have...

    Fence Crawlers

The thought is that we will keep her till she calves, then steal her calf and foster it on the milk cow.. And either sell her or feed her to butcher.

    Fence Crawlers

Why is it always the best looking ones that turn into fence crawlers? Brought one home a week ago, told DH that we should just take her to town and get what we get. Only problem is that she is one darn good looking bred heifer, has some pretty good genetics behind her and is due to calve early...

    A few Photos

Hmm, thought I'd replied to you uplandnut... Most years we can graze quite long into the fall. There are some herds that graze native pasture much longer than what we graze. A lot depends on when the cows start calving, and of course on the weather.

    A few Photos

Thanks, Jed. Boondocks, We keep an eye on the forecast, but the long range is showing really good weather. The cows 1/2 hour away will get moved home at some point. That somewhat depends on the weather, or on how long the grass holds out for them, whichever happens first. If we were to...

    A few Photos

Here's a few photos from the last couple days. Beautiful weather.... Cows are still out grazing and they are looking awesome. There are 73 head in this group, 40 or so are bred heifers the remainder mostly raised our replacement heifers for this year. In addition to the grazing that they are on...

    Haven't Been Around Much

Busy, Busy, Busy. So I haven't been on here much the last little while. Calving went well for us, we calved out an extra 170 cows for a couple other guys, so that kept us pretty busy through April and May. Then it was time to get ready to do the 4H Beef thing, with DD. And of course now we are...

    estimating calf weight

My best advice would be to weigh them until you are fairly accurate at your estimations. We've weighed for years and can still be waaaay off on our guesses at times.

    900 lb bull

He's breeding 8 cows for goodness sake. He's not going to ruin someones registered herd of cattle. I expect he will grow, and put on some weight. If bull calves can breed a cow, the guy should be able to also.
