Too Hot & Dry in TX, Too Cold & Wet up north

My concern with shipping hay by rail is fire.

    Fly tags

We always just put out rubs and if things got really bad we would coral the cattle and use a hand sprayer. Got tired of all that messing around so we decided to try fly tags a couple years back. Used Avenger tags and while there were still flies, the number was acceptable to us and haven't put...

Too Hot & Dry in TX, Too Cold & Wet up north

We are wet and cold. Had 6 inches of snow yesterday and we were sloppy muddy before that came. Finally going to get above freezing today. Our average high is close to 60 and we are struggling to get above freezing! The moisture is nice but we have to get seed in the ground to take advantage of...

    mineral

Don't worry about the mineral. Buy a higher protein feed as that will do them more good than adding minerals.

    free martin holstein heifer

You mustn't be around a dairy very often because I certainly don't have any spare time lying around. I sell all my bull calves because I just can't give them enough attention to raise them or I would keep them around. Just as a note, I had a couple freemartin Holstein heifers last year...

How bad is Bovatec for dogs?

Kinda what I figured too. I'm going to see what happens with the components through spring and summer to see if I can figure out what's going on.

How bad is Bovatec for dogs?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll try to keep her out of the milk but at least I can breath easy if she does get a little bit. I was just worried that she would get into it and be dead. Regolith, I would look into using Rumensin if you have a system where you can add it into your feed mix...

cow paralyzed after pulling large calf

I would just give her some time. I've had it happen a few times where their backend was paralyzed and they couldn't do a thing with it. Gave them a few days to recover and just like that they were standing, albeit a little wobbly at first.

How bad is Bovatec for dogs?

I ordered a ton of milk replacer and only after I had it all stacked in the barn did I realize it now contains Bovatec (they banned milk replacer have neo-tet anymore). I think it wouldn't be a bad deal to help the calves gain a bit better but I am concerned about my dog. She likes to clean up...

So 50% AI take isn't any good? Read this.

A beef cow/heifer should be 75+% conception rate I believe. I haven't run the numbers lately but I think I'm over 50% CR on my dairy cows and they are some of the worst animals to get bred!

    Feeding from hay trailers

The biggest problem I have with hay trailers is the lack of available space for cows to eat. One trailer with 4 bales would be about 22-24 feet long and a cow usually needs 2-2.5 feet of room. That means you would probably only get 22-24 cows on one feeder at a time.

So 50% AI take isn't any good? Read this.

“It seems like we've hit a wall with heifers at about 55 to 60 percent AI pregnancy rates in commercial herds. We are not really sure why. Now, in the post-partum cows we are seeing 55 to 65 percent in many of our large-scale studies that have been done with producers. I am conservative, telling...

    Supplementing the supplement

If he isn't growing with 12-15 pounds of your pelleted feed I wouldn't be keeping him for breeding purposes. Just as a note, oats is typically 12-13% protein.

$186 sounds cheap compared to everything else. I am assuming this is a complete feed with protein and all?

    heifers

If you're wanting to increase your herd, keep them. Just realize you will have some pretty expensive heifers as you could make good money selling them. As far as when to start breeding, it depends on how well the heifers are growing out. Like boogie said, 24 months at calving is the standard...

    Growing Corn

I think you are far better off buying your corn for feed. It takes a lot of inputs, machinery, know how and luck to get corn in the bin. I have most of the equipment to grow grain corn (I grow corn for silage) and still choose not to do it because I don't think I can make it work. Keep in mind I...

    Hoop vs monoslope

I put up a 50x84 hoop building last year. No experience with a monoslope though. To me a monoslope seems like it would limit how big you can go and keep a decent amount of ceiling space for air exchange. My hoop has a nice high arch to it (about 22 feet at the center) and it seems like the air...
