    wormer pour on ?

If you are going to use a pour on, I would use name brands. I have seen some data that indicates the generics do not give you the results. One trial showed almost a pound per day difference in feeder cattle. Did it make up for the cost difference?-I don't know.

    Options to Sale Barn?

I have had great succcess Selling calves from the local newspaper.I sold mostly lightweights(300 lbs and under),but had several people interested in bigger calves. Most of the time I sold 1-2 hd. per buyer. Sold over 200 hd in less than 7 months that way.

    What do you think ?

I think she's piggy. I would give a shot of Lutalyse and hang on to her for a month or so. If she's bred that will take care of that problem.I would put a little weight on her and then sent her to town. I wouldn't send her back to the sale before I got that calf out of her. Nobody else wants a...

    how to bag

I wonder if it means checking to see if a calf is castrated yet. I call it "Bagging"-don't know if that is what is meant in this case. It involves getting a little personal with the poor calf. Kinda like Croc. Dundee checked to see if the girl he was with-was really a girl.

    Donkey Problems

I would get a better loose mineral. Blocks just don't give them what they need in an efficient manner.

    better breed??

The bottom line in all phases of beef production is getting the most amout of product-efficiently. I feel that performance is where it starts. Less time to weight and finish means less time on feed. An early maturing animal will finish faster when on full feed, will also have a smaller amount of...

OK, more in the saga of the two Hereford Heifers

I've bred heifers 14-16 months of age and not had any problems, but seems like 16 months is the best age as far as maturity of the heifers on average. I guess it depends on when your calving season is normally. I calve in feb-march which puts the heifers at about the right age the next breeding...

OK, more in the saga of the two Hereford Heifers

Heres my two cents. The heifers need to be 16 months old & of a decent size(700+ lbs),I personally like my heifers weighing 800 lbs.. A rule of thumb is that cattle cycle every 21 days with a range of 17-23. The most important thing is that are consistent with the days between estrus. If they...

Headgate - Need some advice soon

I know several places that I visit, places with more than 100 hd of momma cows, that don't have the quality of equipment they need and it makes for a long day and sometimes gets people and /or animals in a wreck.I have been to many places that a equipment salesman has told them that they need...

Headgate - Need some advice soon

You can have the most expensive headgate on the market,or something in the middle. You can get hurt by any of them if you are not on your toes and thinking about what you are doing. I got an arm smashed a few months ago by a shorthorn cow in a Sibley chute,no broken bones but will takea while...

Headgate - Need some advice soon

I can go to various dealers and buy just a headgate anywhere from $325-$850,just depends on what you need or are wlling to spend. Did not say the $325 hd. gate was going to be the best quality, but if you are just going to work a few cows a couple of times a year,it would get the job done. If you...

Does it help to show the cattle at shows for profit

Showing cattle is a marketing tool for your operation. Very few shows have premiums that come close to paying your expences. Showing cattle is also a great activity for young people, alot of life lessons can be found at the end of a halter. You don't have to win a show, just get your cattle out...

Headgate - Need some advice soon

You need to decide if the attachments are something you will use or need. For $75 - 100 more you can buy a new head gate by itself. If it's in good shape and it's a design that suits you,I think you should buy it.

    Squeeze Chute

I do alot of custom cattle working, work with everything from wooden-Hyd. chutes. If a person sorts his calves and cows before they work them,I think an auto head gate is great. Most of the time they want to sort them coming out of the chute or just don't want to mess with sorting them at all...

    Squeeze Chute

I'm speaking of Powder River,Elk River,WW type auto head gates. I've seen several cows choked down by WW headgates that the opening wasn't adjusted correctly. Then not be able to hold calves, not talking about babies. Prifert chutes don't need to be adjusted because they are a different...

    Squeeze Chute

I personally feel that there are several chutes that would work in your outfit. I personally get along good with Powder River. If you are going to have some average size cows that are fairly quiet you can get away with a value chute. If you have larger cows or cattle that are a little higher...
