    holsteins

I'd say you would have a whole lot of trouble trying to dry off a bunch of fresh calved holsteins, not only that, you would have a sorry lot of calves out of them. It would cost less to keep a moderatly sized beef cow dry for a year than a big old holstein. Complete non starter mate.

    Your thoughts please..

Many AI techs will store semen for you, you may want to make some enquirys locally.

    Your thoughts please..

I think you would be better off with AI for up to 10 cows. I personaly use AI bulls on all cows for first service then turn in a sweeper bull to catch returns. That is for a pedigree seed stock herd, not a commercial one. What you decide to do depends upon what your objectives are. If you simply...

    Your thoughts please..

For 3 cows AI would work out far cheaper than natural service, provided you have an AI technitian who could come out to serve the cows. You will be able to breed the cows to a far superior bull than you could justify buying for such a small number.

    Defining "fancy"

Show ring pretty and functional should be one and the same IMO.

    How you do it

    How you do it

I use a bag of corn most of the time, sometimes have to wear them out with the truck. If theyre not used to corn I sometimes tie a barrel on a rope to the back of the truck and drive around. The cattle follow it right out the gate.

    How many Cattle per acre?

I have edited the previous post to add a link.

    How many Cattle per acre?

Thanks for that post CCMTN, very interesting. Some folks in the UK use something similar called a standoff pad to overwinter cattle. Basically a large corall with drains running through a deep woodchip bed. Manure gets trod and washed into the chips where it is digested by bacteria living on the...

    How many Cattle per acre?

I'm not saying it doesn't work for you, but I think the biggest problem with keeping 3 cows/acre on the same ground for 4 weeks would be the amount of manure soiling the pasture, also such a long rotation would mean a lot of wasted grass when they were turned out on fresh ground, unless you...

    How many Cattle per acre?

Hello there CCMTN. Just a few questions fron an ignorant damned limey yankee ;-) . Is that 3-6 cows rotationally grazed or set stocked? How big are the cows? What is the daily DM summer growth of bermuda grass in your area of TN? Are the cows suckling calves? Are those cows having any...

How long to leave the bull in?

Some of the cows may have heifer calves at foot, if this is the case he will have to take the bull out or they will be bred too young.

    Finish feed

    Finish feed

Yes, corn is higher in energy than oats or barley but will require more protein supplimentation which is expensive. 10% protein is too low in my opinion. I would recomend a level of 13% in a finishing ration. Had a look at Scotty's suggested ration. It comes out at 12.5 ME and 12% protein.

    Cattle Candy

Theres no need to use expensive bagged feed. Whatever is around will do. I just use straight rolled barley every now and then to keep them easy to handle. Rolled corn would probably do just as well.

    Apples and cows

I have fed potatoes to cattle before and there is a risk of choke. It is the medium sized potatoes that are the problem, they are about large apple sized so there is a possibility. Its up to you to decide if the risk is great enough of course. If the apples are not very big, I wouldnt worry...

Please suggest some breeds for me

A jersey will calve a bus in comparison to a pinched assed holstein. I wouldnt have any worrys putting a moderate birth weight continental bull on her. I say sell them all and buy a few good beef cross heifers. You will get to where you want to get sooner and surplus stock will be worth more.

critters tearing up bottom of barn!!

.22 Got a good rat trap. Kind of hard to describe. Basically a large oil drum with a free turning bar over the top with planks leading up. You bait the middle of the bar. When the rat climbs along it to get at the bait the bar rolls and he drops into the barrel. How you dispose of the rats is...

    Thanks for the response

I don't know about that, its cheap for a reason isnt it? And for someone new to farming, they may bite off more than they could chew if they followed that advice. Better to decide how much land you want and of what quality, then look how much it would cost in various parts of the country.
