who makes the best zero turn starting commercial mower

I am sort of shopping around for same. I looked at bobcats and liked them. Seem to be well made, easy to service.

    Entry level cattle scales questions

Not the info you asked for but something you may want to consider no matter which one you go with. I suggest either removing the units leads after each use or encase them in conduit. I didn’t and mice chewed the insulation off the wire which caused the unit to give erratic weights. Seems like...

    tagging and tattooing calves

Surprised no one has brought up the fact that cows can and do switch ownership of their calves. I think it happens more than most people think. I’ve seen it a few times in my small herd. For that reason I tag as soon as it is practical. I try to do it on day one but doesn’t always happen. For...

    Automatic waters

I have a Cobett installed and really love it. I got the one with the short earth heat tube. Requires no power, easy to install. This winter was the coldest we have had in many, many years. Never had the lines to freeze up. Did have about 2 inches of ice on the bowl when it got down to -10...

    How much feed is "enough"?

13% protein is kind of low for a supplement. If you are really needing to feed a supplement high in protein then get one that is a lot higher in protein. At least in the 20% range.

    heat detection

Are you going to do ET work or AI work when they come into heat. If you are planning on ET work I would check with someone who is certified to do that type of work. I think the timing of implanting would be something that you need to watch. Good luck with it.

    Embryo Transplant

Here are a couple of suggestions concerning your possible ET work. First I would look at the donor cows that these embyros came from. Look at their production record. Look at their phenotype. Are they good structured momma cows? How are the udders? How is their docility? What is the sire of the...

    age and weight of calves

A good rule of thumb for better angus genetics is around 100 lbs for each month of age, so about 5 months old for a 500 lb animal. Applying your "it depends", can be less, can be more.

What do you weigh your calves with?

I use to use the scale and a home made sling but finally broke down and bought the one from Valley Vet. I try to weigh as many as I can but if a cow isn't co-operating I just don't get a weight on that calf and therefore don't turn in a bw to the AAA. I am able to lift most of the calves but a...

    calving season-too much bull calves

I saw one of the AI suppliers sold a solution that you mixed with the semen just before using. The mix slowed down the motility of the male sperm and resulted in higher percentage of heifers. I think it was called Heifer Plus. I thought about trying it but never did.

    1100-1200 lb. pure Angus bull

Here is a good website that gives a lot of detail on beef cuts and yields. Also other animals listed. I refer my customers to it so they will have a better understanding of what they can expect to get from a side of beef. I am surprised by some of the questions such as "Can I just have it all...

    questions for a 2bit operation

Are you guessing on the 120 lb weight of the bales of hay. That sure is a heavy bale. Every one's hay is heavy until you weigh it. Especially when it is for sale.

    Be Careful, folks!

This will be very traumatic for his family for years to come. They will forever think of it any time a family member does any work with a baler or other farm equipment.

Better to embryo transfer or buy super females???

Sounds like this person is ready to step in and fill the void left by all of the seedstock producers who are dispersing. I just hope he has more money and time than most of the ones that are dispersing. A lot of them couldn't make it and got out. Best luck to this guy as he chases his dream.

    Priefert squeeze chute

I use the Preifert S04. I looked at the Preifert Rancher model and was worried about some of my wider body cows not fittng through it. I also purchased the automatic headgate but just use the manual function 95% of the time. I built a 90 degree sweep and curved alleys leading into the scale...

    Merial "Ingenity" DNA testing....

I prefer the Bovigen system since it breaks down the markers from each test. Knowing what each one is allows a person to select a bull that will compliment those markers. I'm still not sure how relevant the results are for the marbling genes. I think they are less revelant than the other genes...

    Current hay prices

My area in Illinois was also hit hard by a late freeze that set the alfalfa back and then a severe drought. I am currently paying about twice what I paid in previous years. currently around $130/ton for alfalfa/grass net wrapped. That is my cost with me picking it up.

    Cattle at the Gate

I had the same problem so I installed electric fence around my gate entrance. I hooked up one of the insulated gate handles. Now I can open the exterior gate drive in, close the exterior gate, then open the electric gate and drive through. Nothing elaborate since I already had electric fencing...

    Black angus bull.

If you believe all the benefits of age and source verified cattle being worth more to the producer, then having an angus sourced tag animal should bring more than a non angus source animal of the same quality. I think this is often overlooked whan evaluating whether or not to go with the angus...

    Pasture utilization

My sister recently purchased some property that has approx. 20 acres of fairly decent fescue grass on it. The previous owner was using it for horses. It is fenced and has a 2-3 acre lake adjacent to it. She is thinking about getting a few head of cattle to put on it. She and her son live on the...
