    Cows forcasting weather?

My dad has bad arthritis in his knees, and when the weather is changing his knees usually start hurting. I have noticed the cows always head for shelter a few minutes before the rain starts. If it just rains a little bit, they usually stay out, but if storms are coming they head for the woods.

How to use a rope halter...

The lead always goes on the animals left side. Make sure that the loop that the lead goes through is facing down.

    Ring in nose

The nose ring can be a great thing. It is require for show bulls over a certain age. If a nose ring doesnt stop a bull, then I wouldnt want that animal anywhere near my place. When I was working with my bull, one day something spooked him and he bolted, and after him stomping on my foot I jerked...

Corn field pictures May 10 2007

In this area Ive seen some of the corn growing over 4 feet high already. Still nice and green. Last year everything was already turning brown from no rain by this time. Hopefully the rain will keep up enough to keep things growing. A couple questions for those who grow crops in addition to...

Am I the only one on here that does this

I think yall just made me realize a benefit to having such a small place. My biggest challenge is keeping the grass around the house mowed. Takes a day and a half to do not even every 2 weeks just to keep things looking decent. Fences are all not even a year old, and there is only about a 50...

    Question: Breed personalities

I think it depends on how the animals are treated. In every breed, some are good and some are bad. My brahmans are really tame and will let you do almost anything. Just have to watch because the heifer will lick to death. Ive heard from a lot of people that brahmans have a temper.

    whats the missing piece???

When she does good, reward her, whether its with a handful of feed, or just rub on her some. It shouldnt take her long to figure out that when she does something right, she gets rewarded. If she is acting up and fighting, tie her up for a while and then try again. Most importantly, be patient.

    Moooving cows (pics)

Nice pictures. How far exactly is it you have to take them? The most Ive seen anyone do around here is across the road, maybe 50 feet to the next gate. Pretty much everywhere Ive seen have all their pastures together so they dont have to leave the property.

Pics of some of my calves... be nice

Those are some good looking calves. I guess I better not post some pics from around here. We are up to our knees in....green grass. We need to get more cows to eat the grass.

    20 acres pasture/hay amount?

I havent heard of hay that cheap in over a year. Add an extra 1 in front of that 35 and thats about what a roll goes for here (thats right, well over $100 for a roll here, and thats just coastal bermuda). We have a 20 acre hay field. We bought the land last July, and only got one cutting (the...

    "Do-it-yourself" Dig a water well

We had a water well done by professionals a few months ago and it cost us nearly $12,000 including tank, pump and all of the costs. Was nearly 600ft at $16 per foot. Took them nearly a month to do, since one of the guys accidentally dropped something in the hole after they finished, and they had...

    Running out of water

We havent nearly gotten the stock tank near dry. In fact, its above what it was over the summer. We also have a water trough near the house and a line coming from the well, which is 600ft.

    Found Something

Its late at night, and Im about ready for sleep, so I let the dog out. He is a little hound dog, so he will pick up anything on his sniffer and find it. After he came inside he dropped something on the floor from his mouth. I looked at it, and concluded that it was definately a very large tooth...

    ATV's

We have 2 here, a 1987 Suzuki 250 2WD, and a 2000 Honda 250 2WD. We use them for work and play. Have a small 3x3 trailer for them that we put any supplies in, like wire, tools, dirt, anything we need. Also have a small mower made to pull behind the 4 wheeler to mow around the house, since we...

    Heifer chasing Coyote?

Im not to sure about wild critters, but when we had that aggressive donkey he would beat up on the cattle, then the bull started throwing him around when he got too close. Once a calf dropped, the cow ran him off when he got within 30 feet of the calf. The only one that wouldnt do anything was...

    How Cold is Too Cold?

How cold does it have to be before its too cold for cattle? Keep in mind we have 2 Brahmans and a beefmaster, with a 3 week old calf. We dont have any shelter for them other than the woods. I have no doubt the older cattle will be fine, but what about the calf? He is half beefmaster and half...

    Kawasaki Mule

I know if your looking for something that will hold passengers, they have a new model kind of like a crew cab truck, with a back seat on it. They have the Mule 3010 TransMax4x4 Diesel, but it cuts back on cargo room with the "crew cab". If your looking at diesel, your looking at $10,000+. For a...

    Bull Got Loose

We got him home and fixed the fence. The spot he got over was a weak spot, pretty old and worn out. It was probably the worst spot in our entire fence. Today we took some new posts and got it all fixed up and secured. Plus we walked the entire fenceline searching for any other potential getaway...

    Our First Calf Born

Late last night our beefmaster cow had her 2nd calf, the first one that we have been around for. Woke up this morning and saw him out there. Hes really gentle, just like momma. Momma let us just walk right up to the calf, and the calf wasnt scared of people at all, could walk right up and pet...
