He does tattoos when he when he vaccinates and rings them later on. I assume most people do the same with the eartags because it's hard to work out which is which when they're not with their mothers. Although he does leave some of them if the mother is a bit mad :).
Had a chat with my father a couple of weeks ago and he was wondering when other people ear tag their calves, in the first 24 hours or do people have another method? Just curiousity.
It is strange isn't it, I would have thought with a worm farm going you could get the same sort of results. I thought about a worm farm as well with grass clippings from the local lawnmower businesses but the council does that apparently and doesn't charge them to dump it. Plus too much work and...
I didn't realise you couldn't move them off organic and not back. I guess it makes sense, they are very strict. Without wormers and antibiotics that would make it very difficult to manage cattle properly. I was actually thinking about using some Petrik but the studies were done in conjunction...
Actually while I'm at it there was an organic 'fertiliser' called Petrik which you might want to look in it. It works in a similar way to worm teas in that it promotes microbial activity which breaks down humus. I've seen studies on it and it seems to work but I can't really vouch for it...
I looked into organic beef a few years ago and decided it was too much trouble. The fertilisers you can use aren't very effective and expensive if you have to buy organic chicken litter or dairy waste I'd imagine, the fees were around $6000 a year, you had to wait 3 years for full certification...
That's the best advice I've read. Look at it as a part time job and get a qualification in something else. You'll have to borrow a lot of money to get started and I doubt the bank will give it to you if you're just doing cattle. If you can't get into a vet science degree do a vet nurse...
I agree that you'd need a larger volume than ten to make a reasonable profit, but there is also value in quality. SRBeef gets his beef graded so he knows it's good quality.
You're also making a lot of mathematical errors. He is getting a 65% increase on his margin. He isn't charging 65% over...
Out of curiousity, how do you measure your birth weights (normal scales, mobile scales?), and how long after birth is it done?
Edit: Sorry, misread the post
Just wondering if anyone had used an MSA price grid or just generally what prices are paid over the hook in NSW/AUS at the moment. The old guy has only used the local cattle yard and I was wondering if the prices were comparable (obviously taking into account dressing percentage and carcase...
