    Freeze brand question

Just thought I would revive this old thread. We are going to do some more branding in the next little bit and I was wondering if anyone had any good advice. The stuff we branded last year was pretty much a total flop. 90% of the brands look like fire brands with no hair. We used liquid...

    Freeze brand question

yes, I read the article, and I have a feeling we held the brands on too long. I want to know what experience others have had. How long do you hold the irons on? How long is too long? How long does it take the hair come back? I've read all kinds of things, I want to know what people...

    Freeze brand question

Just got done breeding one of the cows we branded. Her brand doesn't seem to be growing any hair and I have a feeling we might have held the irons on too long. We used nitrogen and held the brands thirty seconds. Was that too long for black cows? What do you all do?

    Freeze brand question

I was just wondering becuase we branded a bunch in late Oct for the firts time. The skin's already shed and growing back. Some of it is still pink or white and some of them have a lot of black skin on the brand. I'm just wanting to know how we did and can't wait. There is a little white hair...

    Auction Markings

Around here, bulls are often marked with a letter or number or symbol so that if they rub off their sale sticker, they can still be identified. The bulls are always fighting and knocking around and losing their stickers. If two black bulls go through the ring that have lost their sale...

    liquid nitrogen

Thanks for the input. I just couldnt figure out how a person would get an iron into an old semen tank, but now it makes sense - pour it into something else

    liquid nitrogen

    liquid nitrogen

What is a common storage device for liquid nitrogen when it is being used to brand? I've heard of using old semen tanks but I dont see how you could get an iron down inside of them. Is there a special container for holding liquid nitrogen when branding? What do some of you use and how long...

    Cow not taking orphan calf.

I guess it's too late to skin the dead calf, but I remember once we had some type of powder you sprinkled over the calf to make the cow take it. I don't remember the name of the stuff but it would burn your nose if you took a big sniff.

    Where Do They Go?

Around here it seems to be a different group of buyers buying cows than feeder calves. They seem to spend a lot of time down in the pens looking over the cows, so I figure they can pretty much tell what theyre buying and what she is good for.

    Mineral feeder

I can see a 600lb calf standing inside of that thing.

    emryo transfers

Beef11, thanks for your input. I understand the basics, I was just curious as to some of the details. Not really interested in flushing anything, I was just wondering what all was involved in transplanting. I am assuming you just palpate for CL? what if an embryo was put into the opposite horn?

    emryo transfers

What do you mean by "set up?" So could a person who is already AI'ing their cows purchase embryos and do some ET without much trouble?

    emryo transfers

What is involved with putting the embryo into the recip. cow? Do the embryo's come in straws like semen? Do you use an AI gun or something else?

We use the term tiger stripe and that's what I've always heard them referred to as. Pit bulls are brindle.
