    Leasing questions

Now I'm no expert on this, but I was thinking I'd heard that you don't finish-out calves on fescue because it gives the meat a bad taste. Looked like a lot of fescue in those pictures, but then again I could be mistaken. Good luck to you and yours tomorrow.

    Real new baby

I know it's just the way the picture makes it seem, but it looks like that mamma's head is almost as big as the whole calf. Seeing how good the grass looks in your picture raises a side question. Did you have about the same amount of grass this time last year (before the drought) as you do now?

things that you have learned are 4sure in raising cattle

I see, if there isn't a high degree of difficulty then it's just too easy, huh. :)

    Cows/calves do odd things

Jo - You know if someone had accidently left the gate open, they'd been through it before you could blink an eye, but since you wanted them to do the self-service move they weren't volunteering.

Where's the market heading short term

Ok for some reason it didn't print the full address. Go to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and over in the Search AMS area on the left type in Texas Slaughter Cattle Auctions. Hope this helps.

things that you have learned are 4sure in raising cattle

OOOOOH. Lordy, I think I'm getting the vapors. Do you mind if I give you a call for assistance the next time I need to pull one? (I'd like to see if your "back to nature" approach is more effective than ours.) :)

    Cows/calves do odd things

Hey no problem. Out of curiosity, you said you lost two bulls and two cows, were they the only ones exposed to the Coffee bean leaves or did a bunch ignore the leaves and these 4 were the only ones drawn to the leaves for some reason?

    Cows/calves do odd things

CFC - Many years ago I can remember Dad lost a cow a day or two after cutting some limbs off of a Cherry tree. The reason it has stayed with me all these years is because I can clearly remember Dad chastising himself saying, "I knew better than to be cutting a Cherry tree when it had leaves on...

    Cows/calves do odd things

Some time back Dun told a story about a calf that was afraid of the sun and that got me to thinking about odd behaviors that cows and calves sometimes do. Saturday I saw another one of those odd things. We moved some of the cows to a different pasture. I put out some Hi-mag blocks and decided...

things that you have learned are 4sure in raising cattle

If you are wearing your clean clothes and think you can make a quick run out into the pasture to check on one and not get your clothes messed up - you're mistaken.

Where's the market heading short term

Pharmer - GREAT question. Unfortunately my crystal ball is rather cloudy at the moment, and my Eight ball says "ask again later" so I can't help. I do know that around here comparing this year to last year, things are not going very well. 500 lb steer, best price in - April, 2007 was...

    new calf drama

Good for you. Nice job on saving that calf. The vet bill seems very reasonable. Thank the Lord you don't have to do that every day.

    My cows jealous

I'm the guilty neighbor. We've got a bunch on some land that is tricky to get around on without getting stuck in the mud. When conditions are a certain way our best option is to put out hay very close to the neighbors fence line. She has a pasture that looks like a golf course fairway...

I learned an important lesson last night - handling cattle

Sid, I'm also glad you're OK. Here's something I do that works most of the time. I talk to them as I herd them along. That way they don't lose track of me and get startled when I show up in their field of vision. The ones who are a little jittery (generally the calves) tend to move on...

Profit from cattle?? Where is it?

I bet most of us on here know one or two folks that spend a lot of their time on a golf course. (You know spending 3 or 4 hours several days a week playing 9 holes, not to mention greens fees, membership dues, cart rentals and buying the new hottest putter or whatever.) So when you talk about...
