    Downed heifer

Have a heifer (4-5 months old) that was looking pretty bad last week so I used the pour on wormer. I left town the next day and sure as ever she went down. Wife has been trying everything while I was gone and I continued when I returned. We gave her LA 200 for first couple of days, cal/mag for...

    worming question

My vet says that the pour on's are NOT effective on calves. I differ with her opinion somewhat I think they do some good but she is supposed to know more than I do..but who doesn't. She recommended either injectable or paste.........

    BVD Results

Results of the first group were ALL negative. Notched a few of the missing ones from last time and will be waiting on those results. Made a couple of facility changes and will make a few more. Like they say it is a never ending process

    BVD Results

I had already looked at it as more of a blessing than a curse. It caused me to upgrade facilities, start vaccination program etc. Just cost a bunch of money at one time that I had planned to to over a period of time. I have three new babies that I have not checked I am hoping what ever caused...

    BVD Results

Finished testing most of my herd last week after having diagnosis of possible BVD a few weeks back. Had 3 or 4 escape the pen and a couple of new born calves we couldn't get in, but all that were tested came back NEGATIVE. Non even suspect. Kinda of a good news bad news thing to me. Even though...

BVD Suspected...Working on the plan of attack

So far the anticipated cost are $3 for the state lab for each test and vet charges $90 per hours plus a $75 farm call. Cost of vaccine $150. (I am going to vaccinate all as we do the test. I think this would be a time saver for later) I suspect that after the first time thru of testing I will...

BVD Suspected...Working on the plan of attack

Stress..stress what stress :drink: :drink: Actually I was raised on the farm and there is always stress. It is either dry or raining too much. It is either to darn hot or too darn cold. Have heavy cattle and the price sucks, thin cattle and the price is sky high. All part of life. Impatience...

BVD Suspected...Working on the plan of attack

Need your input please. A few weeks ago, I noticed a young heifer abort. She should have been about 7-8 months along but did not find fetus just the evidence. Talked to vet and they said watch her. About 2 weeks roll along and notice an older cow that appeared to be in heat. The older cow had...

    Choked cow

The two females vets I was speaking of ARE our vets. Not only do we call them for cattle but we take the horses to them as well as the dogs and cats. When possible we take the cattle to them but sometimes it just can't happen. When the cow is down for what ever reason.. kinda hard to pick her up...

    Choked cow

We are almost in the same situation here. To my knowledge we have one set of vets (female) that will even do a farm call. All the others won't leave there damn pooch/kitty office to even look at a large animal. What really burns me is that they ALL go to a state vet school usually on tax payer...

    Sudden deaths in five cattle

FWIW Several years ago we lost several with some of the same symptoms. An additional symptom our had was the nose was very raw and began to peel. We finally traced it to wild Lantana plant. Not sure if you have that plant or not.

    Safeguard paste how to dispense?

Bought one last week. It is different than a caulking gun. I think it was about $16 at local coop. I am sure you can get it cheaper at Jeffers.

    How long until dry

How long does it take for a cow to dry up if calf doesn't suck? Had calf that wasn't able to suck (see sick calf from 3/2) and after a little bottle feeding ( a weeks worth) he is now sucking some from momma. Do you think she will start to produce again? I am still offering him the bottle but he...

    Cow out flat

She is able to move the feet some. Actually the front feet seem to be less responsive than the back..Yesterday she actually put some weight on the back legs. We picked up the front ones and she stay with some weight on the for maybe 5 minutes. I let the cow lift on her today at lunch. Hoping she...

    Sick calf?

Still feeding him milk replacement. His legs are not straight but each day he walks a little better and a little longer. He is only drinking maybe a qt 3 times per day. Still a bit humped over from the leg thing which is putting him in a position that he can not get to suck from moma. How long...

    Cow out flat

Its Thursday and she is still down. Borrowed a cow lift from a neighbor yesterday and we got her up twice. Also have put two tubes of calcium in her. Going to try and get her up again about midday. First time using this cow lift but have saw it done one time many years ago. Not sure if it is...
