Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

I see lots of livestock on pasture land beside major highways. I think I would have a heart attack and not be able to sleep at night for worrying. Fortunately, if someone is coming down our road, they are coming to see us. Our fence road frontage is not traveled by many. Thanks for the...

Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

That is something to consider. We still have a relatively small herd and have been quite fortunate in the past few years with only one calf loss and now one cow loss. If we grow our herd as we would like, we might want to look into something like that in the future provided it is cost...

Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

Well, the best we figure is that she got struck by lightening. She was in a shallow ditch with her legs folded under her and she had a spot on her neck that looked as though she was hit by lightening, kind of a darkened long mark. Skin was not broken and there were no other outward signs. We...

Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

I think I remember our CPA telling us that the IRS will only allow depreciation for 5 years now (I think that is what I remember her saying). Anyway, it won't be much of a deduction but every little bit can help. We would much rather have the cow of course. Since this is our "first" dead cow...

Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

Thanks for the information. This is a cow (age?) that we purchased two years ago. We have only had cows for ourselves for about 3 years. This is the first one we have purchased to die on us. Any sick cows that have been doctored on have always made a recovery. We did take a photo just in...

Dead cow, photo for tax purposes?

We found our first dead cow in the pasture today. Someone mentioned to me that they take a photograph of the dead cow as evidence for tax purposes when using this as a write off. We have not had this happen and wondered just what we should keep on hand in the event of an audit. Any helpful...

    Pinkeye

Just some FYI: LIQUAMYCIN LA-200 is approved for: The treatment of pneumonia and shipping fever complex associated with Pasteurella spp. and Hemophilus spp.; infectious keratoconjunctivitis (pinkeye) caused by Moraxella bovis; footrot and diphtheria caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum...

    Calf Pics?

That is something, about the tag being attached so quickly. Do most operations catch them that early and tag? It usually takes us at least a week to get them up and tag them. But we are only tagging red or yellow to distinguish between mine and my papaw's. :cboy:

    Calf Pics?

Thanks! I like to hear I have nice looking calves. Most of the fallers were heifers and are really getting big now. We kept 8.

 We never did do anything to this cows eye. It seems to be clearing up, though still looks slightly light in color. She does not seem to be blind in it either. Weight is staying steady. Guess we will just have to see how she continues to progress.

Yes,she was wormed about eight weeks ago. That is a scary thought about the twine....my papaw had that in a cow that died, now he uses only haystring, no plastic twine. Thanks for your comments.

    Photo of cows eye

We have had this cow for two years. The eye only recently became cloudy. Today it looked clearer but we have not done anything to it yet. No drainage. That is also why I didn't think it was pinkeye. I think this old girl is just old. She is as spry and curious as ever when we feed. Has...

Thanks for the replies. I think it is something more too. That is when I come to this board for more advice and input. But obviously it is hard to diagnose online... But with all of the experience on here, it is hard not to at least ask..... :cboy:

I agree, just wondering what sewing does? We had a calf that had to have it's eye removed around 2 months old and it was sewed shut, when we took the stitches out, it stayed shut (of course). I don't claim to know much, but I DO know that our cow has been feed well......

No, actually we just turned her back out into the pasture after having her pent up with daily feed. That is why we were concerned about her health, she lost weight and has not put any back on, even after feeding a 5 gallon bucket of 16% range cubes every day, sometimes twice a day for a little...

Just wondering...but why would it need to be sewed shut? Keep antibiotic on it? Patch not able to stay on a cow? Just curious, sounds traumatic just for pinkeye.
