    Broken leg?

We had a dairy that we think broke her toe she went real lame this happened just as she was dried out so she had 8-12 weeks break her foot healed but not to where she could keep up with the herd being only her 2nd calf I talked my parents in letting me take her into our beef herd now she raises...

    cracked feet?

Our dairy cattle usually get feet problems once they start getting too much protein in their pellets too high protein levels will also affect their fertility among other things. My highland bull (pic) had a bad foot problem & never really got over it breeder told me he hurt it on the trip up but...

heifer with many small wounds on dewlap

Without seeing any photos of the area my guess it could either be ticks or insect bites

Young Cow loosing weight and shaking back legs

Is there a chance it could be a pinched nerve in her back that could affect the back legs. We had a heifer do this after she was put in with the bull either way I'd be either talking to a vet or better yet get your vet to take a look.

That sucks for you, though I do know how you feel we recently had a cow die in the parlour while milking, unfortuantely she was in the middle of the run whe she died.

Dead Cow Walking, I need Help!

We've been told calves up to 6 mths can catch Johnes if careful practice isn't used the bacteria can last in the paddocks for 3 yrs (has been downgraded now to 18mths) & the only viable option for using a paddock with Johnes is to rear steers & send them straight to slaughter. We rear our calves...

    mysterious cow death?

My old boss brought 5 springing heifers one year, when they arrived he left them in a yard & was going to start them on grain the next morning so they would get used to eating in the dairy, gave them hay & water left them for the night when we turned up for milking there was one of the heifers...

    Udder edema

I've been told that odema is caused by having too much salt in their diet. A lot of dairy farmers feed their cows a special springer ration that is available through the feed companies around here. Its not bruising it is retained fluid. I have seen it so bad in one of our heifers that it...

    Complicated Sucking Issue

You could try spreading cow poop over the treats of the dry cow teats, the calf shouldn't bother the cow after that I do the same thing with the dairy calves if they start sucking navels

That is what we do too. Also when we band we always make sure to do them when the moon is going down the bulls nuts don't swell at all. - It's how my grandfather used to do them & seems to work.

    iodine and footrot

I haven't heard that, however I was reading a Pat Coleby book which said that protein levels that are too high will cause foot problems along with fertlity /pregnancy issues as well as a few more problems. I have also been told that feeding cattle idione is a natural way of worming.

    Sick lamb

Hi Karen, I know how pricey DiVetelact is we reared a miniature foal on it from birth. We brought it in a 10kg bag I think it was got it through our local saddlery place. Have you used or tried Pro-Xation (sp?) it may be too late now but it is used to give the body a large boost of antibodies...

    Sick lamb

If the lamb has a rattle I would be thinking chest infection is there any chance she could have caught a chill from some where? ie before you got her or is her pen draught free? do you have a small dog rug to use on the lamb. These cold winter days are hard on little lambs I know my uncle has...

    Need Some Reassurance...

Bottle / bucket fed babies usually get "stress" scours after about 7 days you will notice this as they will look a bit ordinary & will go off their feed & will get the scours. If it is really hot you may want to think about putting some electrolites in her water to help keep her hydrated...

Should I Continue to Worry? Dehorning - Bleeder.

The hotter the animal the more they will bleed (or worked up) When dehorning we mix up a cocktail of stockholm tar & black pepper, adding enough black pepper to make a thick paste. Smear that on the horns it won't completly stop the bleeding on some cattle but it does help & it does keep the...
