can you smell cancer on cow ?

I've seen some very advanced stages of what we just simply call "cancer eye". Could've been pink eye that got carried away. Obviously an infection of some sort, flesh rotting down to the eye socket. Very rank smell. Seen it on their nose too. Once even saw it on the repro area the size of a...

    dehorning the hard way

I was pondering the same thing Vicky. We use a horn iron to stop bleeding for plain old dehorning. The old Cracker Wives' Tale is don't make ANYTHING bleed on a full moon, unless you want to bleed it out such as butchering. So far seems to be holding true in my experiences.

    Mental Problem with cow?

I would definitely have to train my cur dog on her nose before she left.

    Mental Problem with cow?

Heat seizures? Scene it happen in horses before. Do just fine until they reach a certain temp and then just trip, stumble fall down like the electricity went out. Once they cooled off the lights came back on. It was a result of a previous encephalomyelitus (spelling) viral infection.

    Nitrate Poisoning Possibility ??????

Any of yall ever see an animal with nitrate poisoning? I've watched some very peculiar behaviour from a few animals lately. Fertilized muck fields with stargrass and hermarthria. Cattle are rotated daily from one small cell to the next. Lately I've seen once a cow and today a calf who staggered...

    bag rot?

Not a common problem. Must be staph lurking on your farm. Whacked several hundred bull calves this week with a knife or a tag cutter that lays in an iodine/water solution when not being used. No anitbiotics. Vaccinate, dehorn, fire the bleeders, swallowfork the ear and brand. Then turn em out to...

    Skin Lesions

Just a thought, my neighbors are treating cattle for lantana poisoning. Causes them to sunburn real easy and makes them pretty sickly.

cows are way to loose! UPDATE

I've seen herds lose body cindition as a result of the squirts over a period of time. And the squirts were a result of rich rye. Put them on other pastures if it is available and rotate through the rye on short schedules. Heck rye is about done and over with here already.

    permethrin

I use diesel/permethrin in a pump up sprayer to hit their backs (whole herd) at workup. Never seen any harm.

    Mega Prolapse

I tried the sugar trick last season. Vagina sweated like a melting ice cube, but still wasn't able to get it back in. Worked at it for an hour or so and give out. Hauled her to the vet the next day and he stuck it back in in 30 seconds. Slapped stitches in and gave her shots in another 30...

    calves shaking heads

Maybe their wondering why that 2 legged animal keeps coming to stare at them every 20 minutes.

    different kind of prolapse

This might sound funny, but my cousin in the mountains swears by it. He drives the animal to the top of the hill, then chases him downhill real quicklike. I reckon the inards pushing towards the front of the chest cavity helps it to pull back in. Keeping it there is a different story.

Farm Euthanasia of Cattle and Calves

Crowder I tried this yesterday afternoon on a big steer. If you were to draw a line between an eye and the ear, I popped him right in the middle of that. Dang thing stood there and looked at me. Had to go back to the original "dime above the eyes" method and he fell in his tracks.

Farm Euthanasia of Cattle and Calves

Shot placement is key. You could kill a cow with a pellet gun if you hit it right.

    Branding:

Couldn't have said it better. Sort of roll it instead of just planting it flat. Usually takes longer than one would think. Looks like a light tan leather underneath when done right. If the animal struggles and moves, pull away for a second and reapply being careful to position exactly as...
