    What happened?

~ I have DSL and I had to log in 9 times last night and 6 times tonight, so far. What a royal pain in the butt this is. My cookies are enabled, I checked this morning after being given instructions by a dedicated mentor. There is something really really wrong here. Change the topic of this...

    Early Weaning – Tips?

~ Hi UncleLA, If this is going to be your show heifer, it would behoove you, and benefit the calf, to leave the calf on the mom to get the full nutrtion and growth from the milk as long as possible ( at least 180-200 days ) AND also creep feed her grain. Calves do better when left on a good...

Ah yuck, I can still smell it

~ I had a similar situation years ago and used some plastic aquarium tubing from my fish aquarium filter to reach up in the sinus region to drain dried blood clots from a bullet wound in a cow. I wet the clear plastic tubing and it slid right up the nose and did the job. If you...

    Hair Loss on rump.

~~ I think its either Co-ral lice dust or Sevin powder. Effective, easy to use and inexpensive. Will check the container.

    Hair Loss on rump.

~~ There is also a powder you can sprinkle on them for lice. It is very effective. Yellow container, can't think of the name right now... In November, at weaning and preg check, we use Esprinex pour on for worming and external parasites. Very effective for lice. http://www.valleyvet.com The...

    Banding or Cutting Part 2

~ We band and we band within 36 hours of birth. 5 years ago we had a stag, when the band musta broke, and it cost big $$, to have the vet do him at weaning. So now we use the "4 cent solution." Our cost effective "insurance policy." We use 2 bands when we band them. The bands cost 2...

    LUMP ( photos )

~ Hello All, Today was the annual big Fall round-up at the farm. We started really really early in hopes we could beat the rains and wind from Hurricane Noel. I was in charge of the head gate, wormer, tagging and book keeping so I had no time to even take the camera out of my pocket when she...

    15 year old cow

Excellant advice brandonm2. Also have vet check teeth. I have a 17 year old, easy keeping cow that has given me 18 healthy fabulous calves, had a great show career and was in a popular local TV program 3 years ago. This year her winter hair coat is even thinner than last, so she will be...

    LUMP ( photos )

~~ Vet comes Saturday for our annual Fall roundup. Thursday we start moving the herd from the top of the mountain down closer to the main barn. They "should" all be near the corrals by Saturday morning at sunup. I will keep you all posted on the outcome.

~~ I was thinking about Hairy Heel Wart as well, but have never seen it in this location or in beef cattle.. The dairy up the road has a serious problem with it. My vet still can't come out any earlier than Nov 3rd... so we will see then what it is at that time. Hope it doesnt rain on that...

    LUMP ( photos )

~ I went out to the field this morning and took some photos of the lump and the heifer. I also watched her walk, lope and run. She doesn't seem affected by it. Right at the 11 O'Clock area on her bulge, there looks to be a puncture or drainage area. I enlarged the photo for a closer view...

    LUMP ( photos )

~~ She is now in a 200 acre open field. No handling facilites there. Will lure her to feed buckets and rope and tie her to a tree--if need be. Our vet is a calf roper from Canada. I initially thought it might have been an old barbwire snag as there is so much buried wire on this farm and...

    Prickly cow need advice please?

~ Its Porcupine breeding season right now. They are on the ground more frequently at this time of year. I just went thru this with my friends 4 dogs. You need to get the quills out ASAP. Body heat ( of your cow ) makes the barbs expand and they become even more deeply embedded in the...

    LUMP ( photos )

~ She is not limping, but not exactly keeping up with the rest of the calves when they frolic. I blew up the photo and I can see where it could possibly be draining on its own. I want to get her up to the barn so I can treat her, but as of yesterday the herd has been moved to a dryer pasture...

~ Good Morning, This 5 month old heifer came up to the home field yesterday with this lump above her hoof. ( right rear ) She was treated for foot rot in July in the opposite foot. Does this kind of lump look familiar to anyone ? What is it and how did you treat it ? Thank you...

    Mystatus in beef cattle?

~ Had the same thing happen here on a 14 year old hereford last month. Its important to keep the flys off or there will soon be maggots. Spray the cow. Especially the udder area. I keep a bottle of Absorbine ULTRA SHIELD in my truck ( $14.95 ) that I use on the horses, dogs and any...
