Waihou where are you from in New Zealand? I've got some friends from Timaru & Gore/Queenstown.

    some opinions on limflex

If your cows are almost straight angus I would go with a straight continental (Simm, Gelbvieh or Lim). The angus half of the Limflex will cut your heterosis. Depending on the size of your herd put the Marathon bull on the char and herf cows. If your keeping replacements the Balancer and...

Angus vs. Hereford beef quality question

If you know both breeders why not ask them for the EPD's of at least the bull's the calves will be out of and if possible the cows? While not bullet proof it will at a minimum give you more information to perhaps make the decision much easier.

Igenity EPD's for the Commercial Cow operation

    fescue good or bad ?

Johnsongrass is a prohibited weed in Missouri. You can't buy or sell it in the state and it is illegal to sell a bag of seed (a 50# bag of fescue, orchardgrass, whatever) if there is even 1 seed found in the test.

    Gelbvieh

sorry to post off topic here, but it seems someone was going to use DAR National http://genex.crinet.com/addedattraction ... 45&lang=EN (I thought it might be you, Dun?) last year and I was wondering if they had any calves yet? Thanks and sorry for going OT.

    Bull Decisions/Advice

Since you don't know the actual make-up of the cows I would probably start with a purebred bull; Sim, Gelb, or Angus. After you get the heard to the size you want it by adding replacements and/or rotating out some of the older cows (probably 3+ years out?) I would then switch bulls. If you...

    F-1 cattle

It would probably help to know where you were located. It would also help to know what your goals are/ what you plan to do with the calves. How you plan to market them, if you plan on retaining heifers, etc. Depending on where you are will narrow your choices considerably. AI might be a...

    Replacement heifer selection

Sounds to me like you might be in a good position to run your own little experiment. If the cows get split up the same way each year and cows/calves are ear tagged, why not put half of each group in one pasture and half in the other pasture? You can track weights and then see if the "lesser"...

    Knersie In The Hospital

I don't post much on here but I do read a lot........ and Knersie is by far one of my favorite posters. He always has very informative posts and I have learned a lot from simply reading his posts. I sincerely hope he has a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with his friends and family.

    Thoughts on this bull

I have always liked Atlas and also this guy: http://bullbarn.com/gelbepd.asp?ID=185 updated #'s http://www.gelbvieh.org/search/animalinfo.asp?sire_reg=AMGV846221 I would like him better if his accuracies were better though............ disclaimer: I have never seen or used either of them!

    Gelbvieh

I don't personnally care for Carolina Fortune. He is lacking butt for a Gelbvieh IMO. With that said I am by no means experienced in Gelbvieh. From what I have seen though many of the bulls have a lot more muscling.

    STIR the POT - again!

I would be interested in seeing a "before and after" soil test regarding the nitrogen fixation of those legumes. Legumes obviously improve pastures. My understanding of the research on nitrogen fixation was that the legumes fixed nitrogen until they were harvested (eaten) and then many of...

Have to use Reg. Angus for Embro Receipts

I don't see a whole lot of difference in the guys who use a milk cow for a recip so the calf gets a ton of milk and the guy who uses a creep feeder and lets the calf eat a ton of grain.......... Is the AAA going to go farm to farm and adjust there calves based on the feed bill? Maybe that's...
