    Branding

Here in Mt. May & June there is a branding every day, that it don't rain. 99% 0f all calves born are hot iron branded, vaccinated ,steers cut and whatever the owner wants done for the year. It is quite often a community event and one of the spring social's. Hot iron brand's are the possitive...

    Beckton Red Angus?

The original Becktons were dedicated true cattle breeders and am reasonably sure that their abilities and business is probably still carried on by this generation. I would not worry about either the performance and or the genetics as far as Beckton's are involved.

    Horned Hereford -vs- Polled Hereford

The old commercial cowmen here always refered to the polled breed as" no balls, no butts, no bags"! It was very near the truth and like so many things is hard to live down. Only knew of 1 large herd of polled cattle that run strictly as range cattle. That was another reason that oldtimer's...

Which is your top pick? Round Two

We bought 85z and sure considered 49z but a question on a mar in his pedigree stopped that. Also took 101z along. Will let you all know in 18-20 months if they were worth useing or not. Am pretty sure they both should be cow producers.

    Black Hereford

Great Humor!! When we accidently got a baldy calf years ago we called them black herefords and laughed about it. We were so far ahead of the times. About 1950 my dad and uncle who were traveling cattle and horse traders gave I and my sister's a couple of black baldie steer calves said they didnt...

    Horned Hereford -vs- Polled Hereford

SPH,you are right, the hereford breed has a chance to recapture a fair amount of market share and we better pay strict attention this time or forever be a hobby breed. I as a old horrned breedercould get into this discussion and feel like I am winning a large share of this debate, but to each...

    Barf!

I still subscribe to the old theory that a cow should easily have a calf that is 8% of her weight. 1200 lb cow=96lb calf, 1000lb cow=80 lb calf. One other thing I also beleive that birthweight is about 70% controlled by the cow. To small of a calf here is about as much of a problem as a big...

For You That Worship at the EPD Altar!

When,we as hereford breeders started useing epd,s as a selection tool, a good friend and knowledge able cattle man told me that they would be over used as another way to merchandize our cattle. That it would create another set of juggled figures and most likely be used to market some inferior...

    Thoughts on this Hereford bull?

I'm not ,at this time, worried about the big milk epd's as a lot of those irragated epd's are a little exaggerated and usually don't carry on very far. You are right it takes a whole lot of feed to make that kind of milk.WE surely do not need and or expect nothing very near that on our range country.

    Thoughts on this Hereford bull?

Yes that is right, his carcuss data is somewhat of a question but there won't ever be a perfect bull and our hereford 's is'nt considered as a terminal breed. Our strength is and will be maternal and very producer friendly. I know some of you are going to jump all over me for even insinuateing...

    US cattle herd

The power's that be are going to use every thing they can to get our borders open to Brazil and any other cheaper type countries as a great help to the consumer's. Even if the beef is mostly a manufactureing quality product it will be used as a way to lower prices across the board. Our govt...

The oldest bull you've had that naturally serviced cows?

We used JE Lamp 422 untill he was 15. He started breeding cows as a yearling in rough prairie country. Never had any extra feed and stayed very sound in spite of his size. Don Hartland was used untill he was 11. Used a kernal son to 11 and he had been used in a large commercial herd. Have a lot...

    My new charolais hereford heifers.

I think one of the main reason's that there is so few Char and Char cross's here is they are so big and ineffiecent. We are semi-arid and for the most part it takes a lot of roughage to winter here. There is a very large purebred Char operation near here and it does amaxe me how those big[huge]...

    Red Angus

We use Red Angus in our commercial crossbreeding, believing that the Red's are really superior to nearly all of the Blacks. That being said go back and see how the Red Assc.set up the performance rules in order to even paper the cattle. Saw the first ones , I think, in Denver about 1955 or56. A...

    Congrats to Van Newkirk herefords

What a nice sale and the beautifull part of it is a great amount of those bulls went to repeat commercial customers. Been to the sale and was impressed no show no smoke and mirrors. As far as we know its all done up right. Was impresed years ago when they had a lot of Ferry Carpenter genetics...

    Black Hereford question

This situation is mass confuseing to me! The very idea to color everything black and call them something else or pretend they are something else is almost a joke. Like the so called black hereford when how many people knew them as black-- baldies. Like when quarter horse's became popular and...

    Selling Bulls & Buyer Expectations

We do guarantee our breeding bulls to breed and get 1 calf crop. That said we have 'nt had to replace many bulls in the last 50 years. One thing always sell your cattle just the way you would like to buy them. If we don't shoot square with our customers we will soon be looking for another line...

    Black Hereford question

At one time I thought that the only pure breeds whould be,perhaps, herefords and holsteins but was wrong again. I was given to understand by noted breeders of the gelbvie's and simmentals several years ago when I foolishly comented that their black's could'nt be registered rather they were...

Would You Go To A Sale......

Pride!! Like painting up everthing in anticeapation of visitors. Kneedeep straw is over kill but if you delt with OLD timers like me , we grew up with beding everthing all we could, like thinking that we were good caretakers of our livestock. This all said I'm sure that you are close to right in...
