How much xylanine (rompun) did you give her? I've used it to get a cow to take a orphan calf. Doesn't take much. 1/4cc or so. And Congrats on your AI percentage. I don't AI but have enjoyed reading this.

    S s objective t510

I was at a dispersal sale a few years ago with a lot of OCC Homer daughters. They were all fire breathing dragons. Cleared out the ring men and swept the alley on their way out.

    Cow aborts AI embryos

From research at University of Nebraska-Lincoln: "Producers should realize that stress to heifers and cows early in pregnancy can result in loss. Research has shown a pregnancy loss of 1-3.5% when palpation or ultrasound are used for pregnancy diagnosis at 40 - 75 days of gestation." Maybe if...

    $EN/Milk Epds

I was told it's "the quality of her milk not the quantity". The milk EPD doesn't take that into consideration. You can have a cow with a +32 milk and if it's thin and watery with little butterfat, her calf won't gain quickly. If she's a +5 but has high butterfat--

    $EN/Milk Epds

I find a +10 on milk is perfect for my environment and management. Most of my foundation cows have an $EN of +$30.00 to +$45.00. Maternal lines can be traced back to when they stepped on the boat from Scotland with not one designation for a genetic defect. I'm raising my own bulls out of some...

    EPD Followers What's Your Priorities

The 1 thing I do get irritated with are folks that stereotype certain breeders as EPD chasers without ever stepping foot on and viewing their program in person and getting a good understanding of what and how they are doing things or looking at a fair amount of progeny sired by a bull in person...

    EPD Followers What's Your Priorities

A lot of reasons. I live too close. I don't like their type of cattle. They're harder doing cattle. Genetics geared for the feedlot. I'm focused on more maternal lines. I think you can get a good calf with quality milk-not quantity milk. 1680 was a mess and locally, people knew there was a big...

    EPD Followers What's Your Priorities

Sorry Jake. I didn't mean to make my thoughts look like they were directed at you specifically. My question was a generalization. Dun, yes. Terminal bull selection would prevent keeping daughters but possibly not a son. Anyway, it's just something that's rattled around in my head while spraying...

    EPD Followers What's Your Priorities

Pretty much exactly what Jake just said. It's a hard & fast rule for me that there will be no GAR in the pedigree. One question I ask is: If 'you' have been buying registered bulls, lets say Angus, for the past 10, 15 or 20 years,,,why hasn't your cow herd improved enough that you can save a...

    EPD's are BS

The majority of Angus bulls sold today are terminal sires. They're high milk, high growth, high input animals. Their offspring excel in the feedlot but not so much in the pasture. I've found I only need a +10 on milk to have acceptable calves. The females rebreed and stay in good condition while...

    EPD's are BS

If you are selecting a high $Beef bull, you are selecting towards a terminal sire. From the Angus Association: Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of...

    EPD's are BS

In my not-worth-much opinion....EPD's were in their own race to the sky. The $Beef, Milk, Weaning numbers were rocketing to some incredibly lofty highs. I wondered how, when or if they would rein it in. Try to slow the hyper number race down. Maybe this is their answer? I really struggle with...

    EPD's are BS

Bright Raven, I've been told this article explains One Step very well. I haven't taken time to read it. There are just a few EPD's I consider worth looking at and the type of Angus I prefer, The Association doesn't treat them well anyway. https://wlj.net/article-permalink-14428.html

    EPD's are BS

The Angus Assoc recently revised their EPD system to something called "One Step". It made a lot of changes in a lot of animals. It's touted as having greater accuracy.
