    Moldy Bread

Talked to the vet this afternoon and he also said some mold is ok. He said don't feed them a bunch that has over say 30% mold coverage. More important, don't feed them a bunch without mold either because it will make them bloat up big time. If I throw a bunch out the boss cows will take over...

    Moldy Bread

Maybe a little more info would get me a more useful response. I have found a place that will sell me all the bakery scraps I can haul for $50 a load. He suggested I bring a cattle or horse trailer. A loaf of bread weighs about 1 lb 4oz and ocupies about 0.11 cu ft. My cattle trailer is 16L...

    Moldy Bread

When feeding bakery scraps, some or all of it is bound to become moldy before feeding. What problems can you expect with the cattle if feeding moldy bakery scraps?

adg: size, sex & net energy

It seems these gain tables are specified for implanted cattle only as stated in note 4 of the example just before the tables. Its not clear to me whether the reference to the types of implants is saying these numbers are 10-12% higher than without implants, or that you could get another 10-12%...

    Sold 20 head

Some quick sanity checks 826lbs dressed from 1265 live = 65.3% is real good 1265-600=665lbs in 191 days = 3.48lbs ADG is good. If it took 38 animals to pay the feed bill for a pen of 98 then $135.28cwt * 826lbs*38 = $42461 feed bill, and 665lb gain on each of 98 animals (65170 total lbs) then...

    Horns and feedout performance

Thats a good possibility. However, I never checked to see if they were loose. Don't they have to be loose and not attached to the skull to be scurrs? He was a sale barn calf so I don't know what his lineage was.

    Horns and feedout performance

Actually I said "...horn buds..." i.e. not full horns. These were about an inch (or less) long. So some horn genetics were there, but these horns were not a consideration in defending his area of the trough. Other attributes were that he was calmer than the others, always first to the trough...

    Horns and feedout performance

Has anyone seen a study on feeder performance for polled vs. non-polled cattle? I recently had a baldy feeder that had horn buds and did exceptional on feedout.

    Probiotics

I'm trying to find out more info on using probiotics in cattle feed. My main question is can one include probiotics in feed and still make a Natural, or Organic claim. From what little I've read these are not antibiotics.

    Young Bull Development

I've read that bull calves should be placed on high energy growth rations when they are being developed as herd sires. But high energy equates to very high corn content which may be bad for the liver and long term health. What do you use as feed guide lines when preparing a young herd sire.

    Vegetable Fat

Just the info I was looking for. I actually collect waste vege oil also to help lower my diesel fuel costs. I've been thinking about sending some of what settles in the bottom of the 1st stage of my fuel processor out for analysis to see if I could use it as a feed supplement. You have...

    Vegetable Fat

Did you mean the Mix 30 from Dun's post or veg fat? If you meant fat, can I ask what type and where you get it. and how you mix it in with your feed? Also, how/where do you get the specific nutritional data for it (CP, TDN, Fat, or MCal info etc.) in order to calculate the total ration...

    Vegetable Fat

Does/Has anyone use(d) vegetable fat to increase the energy content of their feed? If so, what type or recommendations. I was wanting to mix a higher energy ration for my feeder steers without increasing the starch load to much. I plan to keep the total fat content around 4%.

Selling calves in the middlle of a sale.

Why wait a week? If they are cheaper at the begining of the sale then just buy the first lot, run them to the back immediately to have them retagged and sell em later the same day!

Calves drinking water (follow up ?)

With a 3ft high trough that is not full all the time it is possible for the water level to get low enough that a young calf cannot drink. To prevent this I build 1 foot high dirt ramp at the trough or set the trough into a 1 foot deep digout.

    Loose or Pellets

The 14/65 I get from the NE Texas Farmer Coop in Sulphur Springs is up to $11.50cwt. The pellets I've found are $9.65cwt. Both use cottonseed hulls for roughage. These are freezer beef calves about 800lbs when I start them. I think the problems I used to have with digestion when I was...

    Loose or Pellets

I've been feeding a 14/65 (CP/TDN) loose bulk feed to my feedout calves for a few years now with better success than when I was mixing my own. I feed about 2% BW plus free choice hay. With the significant increase in feed prices I am looking again for lower cost feeds. I've noticed that some...
