    Hanging time

I belive hangtime will affect flavor as well as tenderness. We try to hang ours 21 days. Our butcher says you will need a good fat cover if you go over 14 days to keep meet from drying out too much. This is why it changes the flavor. As the meet dries it concentrates the flavors and gives...

    Corn Silage vs. Grain

What does corn silage cost in your areas? Had a quote a cpl of weeks ago for $55 per ton delivered. He said it was 12% CP and 63% TDN. This would be about same as the ryegrass balage I am putting up. If analysis is same, would a ton of corn silage be any better than a ton of balage? On a dry...

    corn backlog

Its just sacked shelled corn people buy to feed deer with. Every store in this part of the country carry it. The Co-op sells more sacked corn for deer than they do for cows. Johnny

    Dry Lots

The bunks are only 96 ft long so it gives around 12 inches per head. I like them to all be able to get to bunk at first so timid ones get to eat. Once they have been there a while we will increase the density. We have been in the Charolais business for years and are using home grown bulls. A...

feed trough and water tank skirts

The feed bunks are 100 ft and cost around $3000.00 The slab is 3 1/2 inches with fiber reinforcement. We are lucky with good sandy clay soil here and no deep freezing so doesn't take mush for slab. The lot was about $4500.00 That was for 350 foot of fence and 7 12 ft gates. The guard rail...

feed trough and water tank skirts

We did that because the bunks wern't deep enough. We are grinding ryegrass balage and adding waste cereal so it is bulky feed. Needed deeper bunks but these were all we could find locally. Johnny

    Dry Lots

The new pen is 200 ft by 150 ft. We currently have 96 calves weaning in that pen. The other pen is about the same size. They both open into pastures of about 2 to 3 acres. If pens get muddy in winter we can let calves out into pasture to lay around and come back to bunks to eat. Johnny

    Midsouth Stocker Conference

I attended last year. Talks were pretty good. Tours were not what I had hoped for though. Like most meetings of this kind if you come away with one or two new ideas they are worth the time. Will plan on attending again. Johnny

    Why retain ownership?

Dun, Did you do any risk mgt on these calves? Just got back results of our MS farm to feedlot. Calves killed in late march went for $86.50 and made about $50 bucks a head. Those killed in early may were down to $79.00, and lost around $50.00 a head. Could have bought April futures in Jan...

wow, has anybody ever heard of this

We currently do not feed chicken litter even tho it is legal. In the past we used it extensivly to develop our bulls and heifers in a PB operation. Also used it as a protein supplement for our cows.It makes an excellant feed. Because of BSE we discontinued feeding it, although many in chicken...

wow, has anybody ever heard of this

I have fed waffles before that were mixed with cotton tailings. We got them in and mixed with chicken litter for a protein sorce. They worked fine but this feed will be high in moisture, 20 to 40 % depending on rain. So know beforehand you will be buying a lot of water fo $80 per ton. Johnny

    knight tmr vertical mixer

I have a Jaylor TMR vertical mixer model 1500. It is a single auger mixer and does great. It will chop a 5x5 bale of haylage in about 10 minutes. No pieces over 6 to 8 inches long. Then I add my other ingredients and all is mixed by the time I get to feed bunks. Love my Jaylor. I looked at a...

    Backgrounding calves?

I am currently backgrounding my calves from a 300 head herd. It will return a nice profit only if you can work in truck load lots, 48000 lbs or 80, 600 lbs calves. Anything less and you are doing it for free. If you background you calves on pastue and bagged supplement it will only be for around...

All Aboard the Marbling Train Wreck!

I see the same problems. I have been a Charolais seedstock producer for several years now. Most of my bulls were used as terminal cross sires. The last few years though It has been increasigly difficult to sell Charolais bulls because everyone has bought into the Black is better craze. I have...
