Blood on tail - 3 year old char/angus cross cow

I had one with blood on her tail and it turns out that she had caught her tail on something and cut it, so it could be something not even related to her being bred.

They are out in pasture, had 1 calf the other night 19 degrees and 50 mph winds. Got out to check it and thet where laying behind a big red briar patch and the cow was laying on the wind side of the calf. The calf was dryed off and nice and warm.

    calving in snow

We dont have a barn big enough for all of the cows so they stay outside all the time. If a can catch them before they calve I will put them inside but dont very often do that. The cows have brush and woods to get out of the wind. I was wondering if they would freeze before they could get dried off.

    calving in snow

I am in the middle of calving and have over a foot of snow and am going to get more this week. How hard is it on the calves being in the snow, how will it affect them? I have had them in a couple of inches but not feet.

    red calf

I went to the barn tonite and found a red calf. The mother is a black simmental and the sire is a black angus, now if I understand this both the mother and the father would both have to have a red gene to get a red calf.Am I correct?

    Twins

Thanks for the reply, they weight about 1200lbs so if they would happen to have twins the first time they should not have a problem.

    Twins

I have a set of twin simmental heifers that I kept for replacements and was wondering if they are more likely to have twins. The reason I kept them is because their mother is a very good cow, but I got to wondering if I might make a mistake by keeping them.

    turning heifers into non breeders

Thet provide tasty beef once grown out to proper weight. I think if a heifer or cow is bred than they should calf out so the calf can live a life and then be tasty.

    turning heifers into non breeders

I dont like the idea of sending a heifer to the butcher shop that has a calf in her, thats just not right in my mind to kill an innocent calf. I think I will check with the vet to see what the cost will be to spay them. Thanks for the replies.
