    youngest heifer to calve??

In 2000 I had a 15 month and a 16 month calve. One pulled and one unassisted. They are both now 6 and grew to normal size. One 1600 and one 1450. Fertile as ever.

    Stupid Calf Syndrome

This is similar to an article I just read about Dummy foals. Instead of dropping the foal though they wrap it with ropes and pull hard enough (simulating contractions) until the foal falls over. This is apparently enough to rid the brain of sleeper hormones. After that the foal just gets up and...

    newborn bleeding out thru navel

That happened to me years ago. Found calf with bloody legs, navel ripped off at belly level. Calf could not even raise its head. I milked out the cow for 4 days and tube fed the calf 3 times a day. We would try at each feeding to get it up and it could stand for several seconds, then start...

    Babies having babies

I had 2 'teen' pregnancies 5 years ago. One was a tough pull and one was unassisted. I did grain the two of them until they went out to pasture and they raised their calves and are still in the herd. Never missed a beat.

    Brahma bull on heifers?

Sure , if they are Brahma influenced heifers.. if they are not then you could be in for some very large babies.

post mortem cesarean--is it ever successfull?

I did it one time on my cow that had hydrops. She was down and not ever going to get up again. She had no udder but I had nothing to lose by trying. The calf was a bit premature... teeth non erupted, and was badly knuckled over, his coat was a little short but I grafted him onto a heifer that...

    Dead Cow

Another possibilty which is rather remote.... if she was late in cleaning and ended up choking to death by eating the cleanings.

    Crazy Morning final update

Sometimes, when a calf is malpresented its because the calf was too weak to help position itself. This may be the case here. You should know in a couple days for sure, if the calf remains weak and cold despite the tube feedings.

    Lucky me! TWINS!!

Congrats on having it work out so well in the end. Sounds like a wonderful heifer to take that calf right away. You got lucky on that unluckey event.

    Calf Success Stories

Remember the ruptured Belly cow that I had to kill and remove the calf, and then foster it onto a heifer? Search 'ruptured belly cow' if you missed the story. This is him and his adopted mom about a week before weaning. He did quite alright.

Calving season off to a bad start.

That happened to me 2 years ago. Found the calf in a hole wedged tightly with the head back and the mother had cut the tail of the calf several places trying to pull the calf out with her teeth. We dug the calf out and it was amazingly still alive. Wobbly and hungry but ok. A few weeks later his...

    Hormone Imbalance?

What prompted me to post was.... People don't usually sell a pair for slaughter and its even rarer to take a young nursing calf off a cow in order to slaughter the cow.............. but whatever works in your area.

    Hormone Imbalance?

It amazes me to see how many of you folks are willing to let someone else experience the danger of owning your nasty man-eating cows. Ship them for slaughter for crying out loud. If a cull cow is not good enough for me, its not good enough for anyone else either. Take some responsibility for...

    Mysterious Mo

This drives me bonkers. You treated Mo on Sunday and by Monday he was doing cartwheels. Wednesday he is down again which is about the same time the Nuflor wore off and the Dex was long gone. Wasn't the fact that he improved the next day after treatment testament to the fact that the medication...

    Mysterious Mo

Whats wrong with Mo? I don't know But somethings not right That I know. Could be a multitude of things but it certainly does not look nutritional in my opinion. He does look like he is in pain and to me it looks like belly pain. I had a calf like that and could not figure it out until the calf...

    Ruptured Belly orphan update..update

Well it took two times in the squeeze and the heifer has claimed him as her own. Last evening we did the chute thing tying up a leg and getting the calf up there to nurse. She thrashed around again kicking as usual then finally settled down and stood calmly while he nursed. I left them in the...

    I wanna quit!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Holly Heifer, Beleive me I do understand what you are going through. I had a real awful week as well. Death and dying, mad cows who are ungrateful when you help them, and grateful cows that die no matter what you do. I feel for you, I really do. Keep your chin up, and hang in there.

    Ruptured belly orphan update

Thank you all for your very kind words and tips with the orphan calf. its been a nightmare week as yesterday I took a 7 year old cow to the vet with a twisted uterus. Another first for me. I forgot to bring my camera, can't imagine why. I was up half the night waiting for a heifer to calve. I...
