    Calving ease my ass........

Yep I bought a limo bull from a guy who backed his stock all the way to the side of the road. My father had 120 heifers joined to his bulls I bought a random 20 joined it to my pull. I had more calving trouble than dad by double. The stud washed his hands of me and I washed my hands of the bill...

    Fill in bull

I would use him this year and then return him. Because I am assuming you keep replacement heifers, you will be adding that extra diversity to your herd. Keep a few of these bulls calves and next year you can have a fresh bull. I like to spread it around and have a lot of influence in the mix.

Thanks for the replies. I hope it's was understood I had made this decision based on not causing a fuss by asking my hire man to bring me a third bull. I am comfortable with the decision as a one off.

    Renting a Bull

Yes. Hire rate very fair. Had a bull breakdown and it was swapped fairly quickly. Only downside you may not have heaps of choice breed wise. But if your a little guy like me something is better than nothing.

Mating age? I want to go early

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I think I will leave it and just join them to calve after they are 15 months old and maybe just go a bit later and that could suit as well. I should mention it's a hobby, the heifers are out of black baldy cows at least 3/4 angus by the angus bull or by the...

Mating age? I want to go early

Cows are now 12 mon th s old and about 350kg- 380kg liveweight I think. I would like to put a bull with them now as opposed to waiting longer to get the herd...

    Mating heifers

Can you mate Heifers younger to get them producing earlier and change the calving date? I have January born weaned Heifers. Can I mate them in January to get the ball rolling a bit earlier?

Figuring costs for leasing a bull.

I have hired bulls from a guy who turns a fortune. He has heaps of country and as follows. Goes to the sales and buys the one out animal who didn't get castrated cheap. Takes it home an grows it out. By the time it's 2-3 it looks classy as all bulls ten to muscle up. Hires them out at 12$ a...
