    Managing LBW Calves ?

Problems with vigor? No. Growth? Yes. Seems to me the smaller calves are up and going quicker. We seem to have more trouble with the big calves getting up and sucking soon enough in bad weather, but the smaller ones never wean off as heavy as the larger born calves. There has to be balance...

Select Sire Hereford for making Baldies ?

Had a couple of those R294 calves by black 2nd calvers. I would agree he should work on black heifers as good as any hereford would.

    Backwards calf

Like several have said on here, we always go ahead and pull when seeing back feet. But it always seems to be so easy, makes me wonder if they actually needed pulled, and how many may come backwards that we never know about.

Select Sire Hereford for making Baldies ?

I think the bmi is more of a terminal profitability index......?

    mud farm

I'm trying not to pray for rain to end. God knows what he's doing. But we do need prayers for cattle to be fine. These cows even in hill country can have big problems trying to calve in this mud. Calves can't get dried off. Its raining through the cedars now so theres nowhere dry to lay them...

    Still born calf

Moldy hay can also cause late term abortions. I understand its only particular types of mold that are dangerous. I'm Not knowledgable enough to know which.

    Breeding schedule

One way is start out with 2 seasons. Say 90 days spring and 90 days fall. If after a year or so, you want to cut back to one season, sell the least productive herd.

    Truth or Judgement on Breeding

I get what you're saying and agree About mm. I'd like to ask opinions on CEM. It seems to me the more fertility in my herd is usually with cows that have lower CEM numbers. I know some of this is a correlation with larger frame size = higher CEM. I have a young bull now that I'm using as a...

    Truth or Judgement on Breeding

    3. I might need some help with 3. I am not positive what you are asking.[/ There is a market for all types of angus bulls....maternal, balanced, calving ease, and now more than ever...Terminal. When selling seed stock we should strongly recommend to our customers that certain bulls be used as...

    How time flies..

This has been a bad year for them. They came up on 2 farms we had that have been cocklebur free for years.

    Truth or Judgement on Breeding

This is a very interesting thread. I'm fascinated by genetics and still have a lot to learn. I will just add this: all the local registered folks (bull guys) in this area, at least the ones I'm aware of, tend to follow the bull of the month. At least now that I'm raising my own registered bulls...

    High set tail head

That was very well said. Some of my money-makers are small/large/off-colored/you name it. But in a herd building situation those just starting don't have the luxury of keeping replacements from "proven" cows.

    EPD NUMBERS

I like the looks of that bull ok. Epd's aside, he looks like a bull I'd use on cows, looks like good length, but too much bone and head for a heifer bull for me. Now if he was ce 12 and bw 0 with some accuracy I might use him. I didn't look up his AAA number but sounds like he doesn't have any...

    Preg check

Well we checked 23 today and only had one open , an old cow soon to be shipped. 16 of the 23 had been timed AI'd and it looks like only 10 of the 16 took on AI. Cleanup bull got the rest under 60 days. Had 10 others that I didn't check because I had either seen them bred by the bull or they were...

    How many Bred Heifers?

Seems opinions have changed a lot over the last couple years , or maybe those people just haven't responded yet that say its better to buy replacements. I'm in the camp with most of you in raising our own. We've had terrible history with purchased heifers. Right now we are still growing the herd...

    Mothering Ability ?

You know I spoke too quick on that I think. I do have some very gentle cows of other breeds, walk out of the chute, let you pet them, whatever, but you better not mess with their calves. Kind of like my wife, nicest lady in the world, docility score of 50 or so. But don't mess with her kids...

    Mothering Ability ?

LOL. I don't have any intelligent cows. They all just go off instinct. Hopefully they stay stupid and don't figure out why we want the calves to grow. But I do know the 4 Charolais cows mentioned are not protective enough by my standards. Whether its epd's , or chute exit score, or whatever...
