    chopping corn stover

Has anyone ever tried to chop whats left after the combine harvests the grain? I was thinking that if the spreader was shut off and the combine made a windrow that a hayhead might be able to pick it up. Would the long stalks damage the pickup fingers on the head? I was just thinking it might be...

    pasture renting tips

I have heard through the grapevine that a landlord with some sizable acreage for this area might be willing to rent out his pasture. The acres are currently being cut for hay. The landlord has become dissatisfied with the current renter because of lack of replacing fertility and lime. The...

    wheat pastures

Are cattle out on wheat pasture this time of year? If so what has all the bad weather in Texas and Oklahoma done to gain and death loss? If not what time of year are they put in and when do they come off? Sorry if this question seems obvious to some of you living out there but I'm from the east...

    renting pasture with no fence

Pasture rent in this area is around $35/acre. this is for fenced property that is ready to turn cattle out on. I though that if I offered $25/acre and provided some fencing this might not be too bad. I could get by with some electric fence but the property has some highway frontage that needs...

    renting pasture with no fence

I have the opportunity to rent some pasture. The only problem is that it needs a lot of fence work. The land owner does not have the money to make the necessary repairs. I was thinking about offering a long term rent contract at a price that I could afford to rebuild what is needed. The land...

    Baling Oats?

we did this once with big bales. If you are in a high rain fall area I would store them inside or use plastic bale sleeves. We also had a problem with rodents burrowing into the bales and eating the grain. The bales made great feed, we fed them to fall calving cows.

    Best Advice, Pasture Weeds?

I would wait until next spring and use milestone at a high rate. We have used it the past two years and have almost weed free pastures now.

    alfalfa silage

how many tons of alfalfa silage could I expect from an acre of ground? The ground is non irrigated. The soil is clay but due to slope no water pools. This ground will raise 125-160 bushels of corn most years.

    Brown Mid-Rib Sorghum

I wouldn't recommend trying to make dry hay out of it. It is very good if you can graze it or make silage.

    Planting Sudan for Hay?

I wouldn't try to use it for dry hay unless you have access to a bagger.

    oats for hay

the oats have got 5tenths of an inch of rain on them since i planted them. I have not checked them since friday to see if they are up. what would happen if I baled them a little green and fed them up quickly. we have done this in the past with soughum sudan. I guess this method would be similar...

    winter grazing

a guy in our area flies in turnips and oats every year. most years the turnips do real well but not the oats. I think rye would be better. I'm thinking pretty hard about trying this on our farm.
