    I enjoyed this

Thanks Aaron! This introduces the fact that properly managed mob grazing can restore the soil on land that has gone barren through lack of the natural predator/prey cycles that historically kept it thriving and productive. More can be found at: http://www.savoryinstitute.com/desertification/

    Clover in florida?

Everything I've read says H.Indigo is very nutritious/high protein, but not very palatable... so you might have to force it on them a bit. On the upside, that means that it probably won't be totally stripped by deer. I actually like the fact that its pretty persistant, means you won't have to...

    Nutsedge & Cupgrass

not sure of the nutrientive value, but if you find out that you want to control the nutsedge, there are herbicides that target it... "Image" is a brand name sold, you can probably find the generic equal (w/the same act ingred) at a farm supply/wholesale type place.

    Fakahatchee Grass

Anyone here in the southeast have experience with establishing Fakahatchee grass (aka Gama grass) as forage in wet areas? If so, how has it worked out and did you find it to be a good forage?

    Got hay?

@ Ike: you sure as heck can get by without hay if you have enough uneaten veg laying around. where are you at? Hooks somewhere near orlando & my cows are north of him, near Gville and I don't hay. all depends on your stocking rate. we feed molasses supplement to get them to eat less desirable...

Previous lessee won't remove his cows

Yep, know of Mike, bought 3 weanling crossbred heifers from him 2 yrs ago (market resells). They're about to have their first angus sired calves in a couple of months.

Previous lessee won't remove his cows

@ Hook- Did you find a good source of brangus females that you can share?

    Molasses

Good point about the hay, however with 20 cows on 135 acres, you might not even need to feed hay. we have about the same # of cows/acres and just do molasses tubs to help em eat all the unpalatable forage hanging around. tubs and low stocking rate is cheaper than buying hay.
  13. B

    Molasses

The molasses tubs contain protein and encourage the cattle to eat the unpalatable dry/dead grasses, shrubs and palmetto tips- thus increasing their intake through the winter. A few folks feed tubs year round, but winter is probably the only time its really necessary, or at least highly...

    deer vetch

anybody use deer vetch in north florida? (Alachua/Marion/Putnam County area) Or does it get hit by the cold and its better to stick to clover as a higher protein supplemental forage?

Previous lessee won't remove his cows

I read over the statute, however I believe a more useful document would be the copy of the written lease agreement... to see the bit about eviction/notice to remove animals, how many days he has, etc. Since you mentioned that its all in writing then show that to a property/real estate type...

Previous lessee won't remove his cows

you think this guy cares about what kind of calves those cows will have next year? make up something about having a holstein or mini zebu bull that you will be turning out there under your new lease agreement. send him a letter notifying him of this and see if he responds. certainly not legal...
