What is a fair deal for custom baling?

Okay the 8000 was just a number....but even if you double it to 16000 you are still looking at $20/bale with out fuel, operator, net wrap, mowing, or raking

What is a fair deal for custom baling?

I custom bale and charge $25 to mow rake and bale. I am going broke doing it. A good friend and I were just talking about custom farming. A new baler is about 40k wore out at 8000 bales some salvage 10k so those 8000 bales are close to $40/bale without gas, tractor, or operator. So fair is...

Newly seeded grass When to graze???

I messed up last year and overgrazed some beautiful orchardgrass and lost the pasture. To renovate the pasture I no-tilled fescue/clover/alfagraze alfalfa with wheat as a cover crop in Feb/Mar. All of the mix is there, sprouted and growing but I fear that the weeds are going to overtake the...

    best way to sow brome?

I am trying to stay away from fescue because of the endophyte. I have a friend who says fescue never made a turd but it can sure push one out. :) I feel there are better choices. Reed canary seems better suited for loam soil and I am dealing with shallow clay. I hear that cows may not eat...

thanks for the info I had a friend tell me one of the best ways to grind and mix some corn with the brome to get it to carry out of the drill. Can't bring myself to do that at todays prices!

    No Fertilizer

My banker and I were talking about fertilizer and hay production. In our area the decrease in stocking rates with out fertilizer will shock people! (could increase with more MIG) I cut some hay for a fellow who thought he had his land sold and did not fertilize the stuff. The deal fell...

    best way to sow brome?

I had some OG that froze out and then I made a mistake and grazed it too hard over the winter and early spring and basically lost all of the grass in the field. I was thinking of switching from OG to brome but I haven't had much luck in the past getting brome to sprout. What do you feel is the...

    Thoughts on Clover

Honeybees can and should be used to increase pollination of red clover. The notion that honey bees do not pollinate red clover because it has deeper florets than other legumes is false. Pollination of the flower occurs on each visit of the bee regardless of whether it gets nectar. I have been...

    Thoughts on Clover

    Orchard Grass

I have been replanting most of our farms to orchardgrass. The OG does not persists as well as fescue like dun said. However I do have a field that has been in orchardgrass for 5 years now and was in great shape until this last drought. It has yet to recover in some spots but we just haven't...

An appeal to the generosity of the people on this forum

A friend of mine lost 125 bales due to arson. (http://boonvilledailynews.com/articles/ ... /news2.txt) We are in an area of Missouri that was hit with an early frost that reduced our yeilds by 1/2 to 1/3 and then we have had no rain in August and only 1 inch in September. We are in dire need...

    Lime and nitrogen

My guess is that lime in a lagoon is not reacting with the nitrogen but probably an acid like sulfuric acid. the Calcium hydroxide in the lime converts the acid to water. I wonder if the smell comes more from sulfur or hydroden than anything to do with nitrogen. :?: The calcium will also...

    Net wrap

I net wrap and string tie bales. I can store 168 bales under tarps and bale bonnets. Those I do in string because it costs $0.60/bale for string. The net wrap here is $210 for "end" wrap. I get about 150 bales per role. The net is better if you are going to store more than one year. If you...

    Spring hay seeding

I sow all my orchardgrass in the spring. seems that I can't get into the fields early enough in the fall to get the orchardgrass a chance to start. (I used to coach fall softball at the high school and was way too busy.) I use bin run oats at about 40#/acre and use the recommended amounts of...

    Spray to kill thistles

use crossbow. cross bow does not kill grass and you can spray nearly any stage and zap those nasties. I generally don't spray thistles until end of june or july and I get great kill. Just get them before they flower. I think the mix is about 3oz crossbow/gal. Use a surfactant also.

    Fescue life span

You mean it actually dies on your place? We burn, spray, plow, overgraze, and cuss the stuff and it never goes away! I think it outlasts rocks.

    seeding orchardgrass into existing clover

is there a better implement than a no till dirll to use? We generally have to put wheat or oats with the OG to carry it out of the seed box with our drill. And the drill has 7" spacing. I thought about broadcasting some OG seed in a starter fertilizer and then drilling in the rest :?: :?: Am...
