Need Advise on What to Plant

Another thing to consider is the type of forage already present, if any. If you aready have forage on the place, you might want to stick with it.

Need Advise on What to Plant

I don't know where in the State you are located, but in good clay type bottomland Dallisgras/Ladino clover is an excellent choice. Also, with perennials such as Dallisgrass or Bahia, you don't have to replant every year.

    Dallis grass

Yeah, what Mike said. Don't you dare replace good Dallisgrass with fescue. Use what you got, and if that's the card you were dealt, you got a good hand. Also, plant some Ladino clover in that Dallisgrass and you'll have about the best pasture combo found in the South.

It's time to plan fall pasture renovations. What are yours?

The discussion of the endophyte KY 31 has been revived many times. As I have said before, an extension agent told me that it was next to impossible to rid a farm of infected fescue. He said that to have the best chance of ridding yourself of it is to poison the grass on your farm and along the...

    Going Hayless: Part 2

Dyates is correct. I haven't fed hay in several years. Most of this farm is in KY 31 tall fescue. I set aside a portion that I will stockpile, turn the cows on it in late summer and let them graze it low. I then remove them and pray for rain. When rain is immenent, I hit it with 60 lbs/N and...

Brainstorm....how to drain the 10 acre bottom pasture.

NRCS guy told me that they will advise but not help financially with drainage problems.

    Grass Clippings

Here it is June 14 and the high today in north Alabama is only 81? I think we've got a pretty good grasp on what COLD is! Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. 8)

    goats cleanup crew??

I was in the goat business once, about 7 months ago for about 5 minutes. I bought two nannies to clean up my corral and barnyard. As soon as I let them out of the trailer they found a gap that I didn't know existed and entered the pasture. I thought that would be OK, that I'd just open the...

Going a different route with hay.

No hay used on this farm. The cows graze stockpiled fescue all winter long.

    Dolomitic or Calcitic Lime

If I remember correctly, we learned in Soil Science at AU that calcitic lime began to react sooner, thus correcting pH quicker.

    Small Sweetgum trees

I've got a hill on my place that was cutover and I converted it to pasture about 17 years ago. I still get sweetgums every year from the old roots, buckeyes, too. Ground has been fertilized, grazed, bushhogged, and the trees spot sprayed with roundup. They keep coming back. Cows will graze out...

    Prescribed Fire

Prescribed burns are a best management practice and should be done to improve wildlife habitat, control unwanted vegetation, and keep the fuel reserves limited. If prescribed burns had been allowed in Yellowstone, the catastrophic fire of 1988 very likely would not have occurred. I like your...

    Hauling Hay / Livestock Trailer

I've hauled round bales on a flatbed that had 4' high sides on it. Loaded it by placing a bale on the back and then pushed it up with the second bale and so on until the trailer was full. Unloading was a matter of wrapping a chain around all the bales and backing the tractor up. It looks like a...

    springs and artesian water

At the risk of hijacking this thread, let me share with y'all a story about an artesian well. My brother was lead man for a survey team back in the '80's. They were surveying some property that had an artesian well that had been capped and fitted with a shut off valve. The pressure of this well...

    Pictures of a new Fence

Ain't it strange how a man posts a picture of some excellent construction and gets raked over the coals because some "dude" wants to accuse him of bragging about how rich he is? Good lookin' fence, Nowland!

    stockpiled fescue pasture

I've done it both ways, sometimes in the same year. However, I feel it is more feasible for me to topdress in the fall since it eliminates my need for hay. I have more wasted forage if I topdress in Feb/March since it grows faster than the cows can graze it. It loses quality quicker in the...

    stockpiled fescue pasture

I have stockpiled fescue for years. The past three years I have fed no hay. I put out 60 lbs. of N/acre and only feed a little corn on extremely cold, wet nights. My fescue is KY 31 and fungus infected. The cows thrive on it.
