Has anyone heard of "Macho" bermudagrass?

Mr. David Davidson, Sr. was selling his "patented" form of bermuda last year - sprigs by the bushel. One plants it as one would any hybrid bermuda. His web site is down but his address is 1287 West FM 476, Poteet, Texas 78065. (478) 982-3937 (830) 570-0942 The soil on his farm is a deep...

    Tree Question

Too bad you already cut off the broken part. Frequently split trees can be put back together with bolts and cables. Painting wounds went out of favor in the early 70's as Dr. Alex Shigo explained to the tree world that trees protect themselves with chemicals produced within the tree that...

    Pasture restoration

I've always run a harrow over my seed to get better soil contact, but have recently tried a different approach. Using MiG or HDG (high density or mob grazing), I spread seed about 15 minutes prior to turning loose the cattle into the paddock. Then I let them stomp the seed into the ground...

    Pasture restoration

You might want to use a drag harrow on the fields to lightly bring them back into better condition. A harrow will allow for native grasses to come back from seed lying dormant just beneath the surface. I wouldn't worry about "weeds." Cattle need diversity in their diet...

    Controlling Winter weeds

In the video, it looks like they mix a few bushels of weeds with corn meal and molasses and then set the "salad" out in 1/2 barrels for the cows to eat. Rather than doing that much work, I just spot spray weeds with molasses (horticultural molasses mixed 1 gallon of molasses to 3 gallons of...

Grasses or forage that grows well in shaded areas

Using St. Augustine (SA) for cattle is an interesting idea. SA does well in deep soils with little or no irrigation IF you can keep it 4 to 6 inches deep. Cattle will quickly graze it too short. Rather than worry with "shade tolerant grasses" why not simply raise the low limbs of the trees...

    Controlling Winter weeds

Why try to kill the weeds? Let the cattle graze them down. If the weeds aren't allowed to bloom, they won't be back as most "weeds" are annuals. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dANLnHEi19A. (Cows Eat Weeds.) Thistles and other especially obnoxious weeds can be grazed heavily if you...
