    turning cattle onto ryegrass

I'm getting ready to turn cows onto ryegrass. It's about 6 inches tall and is growning rapidly. They should be able to stay on the ryegrass for about a month. I just purchased some free choice mineral supplement for them. Is there anything else I should do? Should I feed some hay as well?

    Dead Cattle

From reading these posts I have lost a lot of respect for this site.

    Organic Fertilizer

I have been having sludge spread on pasture and hay land for free for several years, as had a neighbor of mine. It is spread as a wet solid(not pellitized). They spread about 8 or 10 acres a year and will go over the same ground about every 6 years. The company tests for lime and spreads it...

    Caps for Wood Post

I agree with the last three posts. I have never seen a fence post fail from the portion that is above the ground. They always rot below ground level. Covering, treating etc a post at the top is a waste of time & money.

    pine lot into pasture

2 years ago, I cut down a 3 acre strip of 10 to 20 foot tall pines between pasture and woods that was fenced in. I left the trees where they fell and left the stumps about 2 feet high. My idea is to gradually turn it into pasture. The needles and small limbs have fallen off and the trunks are...

    It's Raining!!!!! How much pasture/hay?

Piedmont NC: We are getting the best rain since March. I had 50 units per acre of ammonium nitrate put out last week on 35 acres of fescue pasture that had been eaten down close to the ground. This late in the year, how much eating will 25 brood cows get out of it this winter? (In another...

    lacertions

I have made a huge mistake treating the calf. After it looking much better yesterday, I discovered this morning that maggots had eaten a large part of the muscle. There is now a 3 inch X 3 x 3 hole. I found some screw worm medicine and started using it this morning. A half hour after...

    lacertions

What I have done so far is peroxided it out and then rubbed neosporin on the cuts twice a day. It seems to be healing well. The swelling has mostly gone away and it is walking normally and nursing. I used to have some of the spray that Brute 23 talked about but I can't find it anymore in...

    lacertions

I have a 4 day old calf that was attacked by 2 dogs. My neighbor was able to scare the dogs away but it has several lacerations on it's rump. One is deep enough that I think I am seeing muscle. It is swollen and seems to be weak in one leg. It seems to be getting enough milk. How best to...

    hoof deformities

I took over the beef cow herd after my father passed away, so, he may have treated the other 2 for footrot several years ago but I have no way of knowing.

    hoof deformities

I'm positive that one had foot rot about 2 years ago, because I treated her. The other 2 may have but I really don't know.

    hoof deformities

All three cows were born on this farm and may be related but distantly, so I don't think it's genetic. They are between 7 & 15 years old. I think it may be either related to foot rot or a mineral defiency.

    hoof deformities

I have about 25 brood cattle in central NC. 3 of my cows have hooves that are elongated. One of them has hooves that have crossed over each other. They are on pasture all year and their diet is solely grass/clover pasture or hay. They may have had foot rot in the past. Any suggestions as to...
