    Cattle Call

"Here cow!" Don't even need that unless one or more has gone over the fence. They have their "watches" set for 5:30pm. They are lined up at the feed trough when we pull in at night. Grandson just puts on his red hat and yells "Momma". The lead cow heads his way and everyone else follows. :lol2:

    Birth Weight--How do you know?

Thanks, Frankie. I guess I'll have to estimate the weights, my longhorn just doesn't want me getting too close to the little one. About 5 acres away is about as close as she will let me get. But thank you, i had no idea what a weight tape was or how to go about getting the weight from it.

    Birth Weight--How do you know?

How do you tell the real birth weight? I've heard of a weight tape(?) but don't know what it is. We don't have any scales close by and my cows are not used to getting put in trailers. Any ideas for me? :(

    Calf question

Thanks y'all. I hope to be able to post some pictures pretty soon of a new longhorn. She is bagged out and is sure miserable looking. But i'd be miserable being 9 mo preg and it was 105 outside. Going out to turn on the sprinkle system for her. Thanks again. Anybody got an idea on the...

    Calf question

I've got two cows that I thought would have calved by now. The longhorn is starting to show the hip bones and her tail seems to be bending(?) up. The holstein is just a wide-load but her bags are starting to fill out. Any ideas how to tell when they are ready to calve? They were bred around...

How do I cope with Butchering..???

;-) Our first bull calf was named Chuck. Short for chuck steak, chuck roast, well, you get the idea. We have a freezer full of "Chuck" and yes, we could feed him cubes through the fence, he would come to the fence when you called his name, but when he went to butcher, I had two weeks before he...

What did I do? (Calving intervention required for new cows)

I almost lost my heifer when our neighbor's bull (angus/brahma cross) talked her into grazing his field. We lost a bull calf and the girl was down for about two weeks. Got more info about six months later from the guy that he had lost four holsteins because of birth complications. Oh and he...

    Longhorns...

:) I bought a longhorn heffer when she was 14 mo old, 7 mo bred by a longhorn bull. She wasn't very tall but she can clear a 5 foot fence with no trouble. Her calf is a very good looking bull. About 2 yrs old now, has good horns and is gentle? enough to feed by hand through the fence. Never...

    grass

Does anyone have the info about buffalo grass? I've seen good and bad reports for cattle graze. What is your take?

    ALFALFA CUBES

We are adding the pellets to our heifers along with the hay and ranch cubes. Husband doesnt want them to lose any weight during the winter. They were eating the cedar trees on our land until he started the alfalfa. Does that make any sense?

    Help please BOY'S misbehaving.

A donkey will work, if it has been raised with cattle. Ours wasn't. He's gone now. He wanted to be "lead" bull. We got tired of patching up his handywork on the ears, sides and backs of our bulls and cows. Seperate them for about two weeks, put em back and if they are like our two, they get...

    Bull question

Definitely, get that bull checked. My 15 month old will mount anything that doesn't get out of his way fast enough (including my red angus bull). I thought all longhorns matured faster than other cattle, maybe mine just wants to be like the "big" boys.

How do we tell if it's just estrus or if she was "got&q

Our holstein is around two years old. She had a calf in April that was dead when born (it was way too big for her). Now she has mucus(?) running out behind her. Is it just that she is in estrus or did our bull finally get her? How do we tell?

Red angus bull, when is he ready?

If we have more than one bull, and only two cows, could that be why he hasn't performed? I think we just have too many bulls and not enough "girls". Ya think the same?

Red angus bull, when is he ready?

We have a red angus bull, he seems interested in our two cows, but that's all. How old does he have to be to be willing and able to breed? He is about a year and a half now.
