    My sad story.

I have been off the boards for awhile. I missed you all and still check in to see what's going on.... I have moved to Houston, and left my farm and cattle behind. My marriage of 16 years broke up. My husband "moved on" before our marriage ended. Maybe I spent too much time with the cattle...

    Lump on leg, weight loss

I have a young cow, with her first calf who had lost an unusual amount of weight. Her calf is doing well, but the cow started to look bad. I figured she just was a hard keeper and that baby was pulling her down. About a week ago, I noticed a fist sized lump on the back of her thigh. At...

unusual pet...can you guess what he is?

I have had this guy since 1988 (so he is older than some of our members). He is a very easy keeper. I keep him in a rabbit hutch outdoors during the warm months, and during the cold months, I put him in a pillowcase in a drawer, in the house. He doesn't eat from September till April...

    New Baby

I have been anxious for this baby to be born. Due Saturday, born this morning. She is the first out of our home grown bull, and was born of a cow who lost last year's calf to an obscure strain of lepto. I think she's a dandy!

most dangerous plant in the world

OK maybe a little extreme...but this plant will try to fool you with it's glossy leaves, and beautiful purple iris-like flower. If you really hate someone, or need a little revenge, put one (you only need one!) in their pond. Water Hyacinth

Breeding age of brahman influenced heifers

I have never worried or had a problem with my heifers calving too young. I have never seen a bull show any interest in a heifer until she was about 14-16 months of age. All these posts about calving too young has me wondering if brahmen based cattle are exempt from this problem?

    Meet "Old Pop"

About 4 or 5 years ago, I noticed a stray dog slinking around. Usually at night, I would just get a glimpse of him disapearing in the woods. I leave full bowls of kibble on my front porch for my own dogs, but usually my dogs run off any strays. My dogs seemed to ignore this one, so I figure...

    Is La Ready?

I am watching the 10 pm news out of Shreveport, and it's showing the preparations if Gustav hits Louisiana. In Shreveport, they are using an old mall and old Sams as a supply warehouses for the Red Cross. The fairgrounds have over 700 animal cages being set up for pet evacuees. The Guard is...

My only two January calves were weaned yesterday, as you can see, it's been hard on them. Poor things. How would you describe the color of this calf?Paint? Rainbow? When do they learn back door nursing is a dangerous thing? Do you wonder how Mo is? He never stops eating. and he is a...

    Neospora Cow has healthy newborn

My neospora cow, Diamond, had a healthy bull calf, this evening. 102 degrees in the shade. She delivered 13 months from her abortion, but 11 months from what would have been her last years due date. She raised a rejected calf in the interim. I am glad I didn't cull her. She's a great mother...

    Explaining the Beefmaster E6 program

There seems to be some confusion about the the difference between the E6 and upgrade (to registered) program. I copied the following from the Q&A on the beefmasters.org website. The E6 program is designed to add value to commercial crossbred beefmaster females. For whatever the reason these...
