    Navel Infection

We had our first case of navel ill this year. Took the advice given on this forum, Hit hard ASAP with Nuflor (2 strong doses) in combination with Penn. I picked the scab off (gloves) and squeezed some pus out. It was real hard and not a lot came out, but it seemed to help. Also, calf got scours...

    Heifers not showing heat

This is our 3rd year keeping replacement heifers and breeding them AI. We have been watching for heat for at least 20 days and 5 days ago I gave them all (4 hd Charolais) a shot of Lutalyse to induce heat. As per our breeding program, we watch for heat for 5 days, give a shot of Lutalyse to...

    Calf with colic

Calf is still doing fine today, must have just had a belly ache. I didn't give it anything, it just seemed to pass. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

    Calf with colic

Just checked again (1/2 hr later) and calf isn't flopping around anymore. It just tore across the pasture with another calf. Maybe the pain is coming and going or???

    Calf with colic

Just checked the cows and calves, all were healthy this morning and now this evening have found a calf (1-2mon) laying flat out and kicking at its belly. I got it up and it would stand funny, all streched out, and would kick at it belly before flopping back on its side on the gound again. This...

    Calf with Navel infection

We followed through with the treatment and he is doing well. The swelling has almost disappeared around his navel and he hasn't been scouring for a couple days now. We put him back in 'general population' today and he seems to be getting along fine. We will keep an eye on him for a few more...

    Calf with Navel infection

Thanks for the tips. Apparently my partner had already checked for hernia and made sure that wasn't the problem, but she never told me... She has a lot more experience with cattle than I do - I just do the grunt work and provide a good decoy target for angry cows 8-) Anyway, this morning he...

    Calf with Navel infection

We were out checking the calves today and noticed one with a baseball size swelling around his navel. He is a week old and it just appeared. I think it is infected. We gave him a shot of penicillin, but were wondering if there were any other recommendations. Should we consider lancing or...

    Signs of Fever???

We just went through the same thing with one of our cows. Knew she wasn't right as she had droopy ears, not getting up for the grain etc. When we caught her she was at 103.7 For cows I believe anything over 103.1 is considered to be a fever. Turns out she had a dead calf in her :(

    Retained Placenta

Just thought I would give an update. The cow aborted her calf 2 months premature on Monday morning. We gave pennicillin daily for three days for prevention as per the vet and on Thurs she passed the retained placenta on her own. Now she seems fine and is back up to the manger with the rest of...

Did you treat her with anything?

Cow with low appetite, droopy ears and isolating

It should have been at about the 7 month age range and it was about 40 - 50 lbs.

Cow with low appetite, droopy ears and isolating

One other thing to note with this calf that was aborted is that is was born with no hair. We thought that the lack of hair was because it was 2 months early but a friend of ours didn't think that was normal. Does anyone have thoughts on the hairlessness of the dead calf?

    Retained Placenta

This is actually the same cow as we have been discussing previously (see cow with droopy ears/isolating). This cow had aborted her calf 2 months before her due date and now has retained her placenta. She calved it out this morning around 7:00 and has not cleaned out yet. We have given her...

Cow with low appetite, droopy ears and isolating

Just thought I'd post and let everyone you was nice enough to provide suggestions know what the problem was. This morning we went to check on her and she was in the middle of pushing out a dead calf :( She got it out on her own, and then we checked her to make sure she didn't have another...

Cow with low appetite, droopy ears and isolating

Thanks for the info. I figured the symptoms were pretty generic, but I hadn't seen the droopy ears before and so I wasn't sure if that was an indicator of something in particular. I noticed today she has a bit of a cough and runny nose and is a little drooly as well. Her eyes are also very...

    Has anyone had this problem?

It may not be the mucus plug. Our cows do what we call 'gooping' 3-4 weeks before they calve. We will periodically see slimy strings hanging off their back ends or tails. It helps narrow down the expected calving date, but don't hold your breath, it could be a while yet.

Cow with low appetite, droopy ears and isolating

We have a cow (charolais) who has been acting a little strange over the last few days and were wondering if anyone might have an idea of what is happening. She is isolating herself from the rest of the herd, her ears are droopy and though she eats, she doesn't seem to have much of an appetite...
