Weaning question on a twin, not sure which forum

I am sorry, I was stupid, and wasn't specific. My fault. I always try to be very careful to post all the facts. I know that everyone's time is valuable. I am blushing!!! We do not have a momma for the baby. He is being bottle fed. He was sold to us by a dairy farmer who did not want to...

Weaning question on a twin, not sure which forum

Hey everyone. I have a Holstein twin. It was the only survivor. It is about five weeks old now, very small, about 55 pounds. I have never had one this small before, that survived. I am not sure he should be weaned at 8 weeks. He's perfectly healthy, lively, happy little calf. He's just...

    holstein knuckled over

As with any animal, different ones will have different temperaments. I raised Holsteins for many years, and was around in and helped out at many dairy farms. I have seen few Holsteins with bad tempers. But, ANY animal can be dangerous if the right situation arises. Especially a large animal...

    WHY is she doing this?

She's up to a bottle and a half at each feeding, twice a day, with water in a pan. She also has grain in front of her at all times, and hay. Thank you for those of you trying to be helpful. I am not a calf expert, and admit it. I have just never had a calf to chew like that. Now, I have...

    WHY is she doing this?

Right, I know that they suck on everything. I have experienced that forever. She's not sucking, she's chewing. Hard. It sounds like she's chewing rocks when she does it.

    WHY is she doing this?

Yeah, I've been doing the putting it in her mouth, I've had to do that to all of them. Hmm. I just don't know. No, we haven't been letting her roam around yet, we are in the middle of a horrible heat wave, and I didn't want her out in the middle of it.

    WHY is she doing this?

I have a 2 and a half week heifer, she is a holstein, Jersey mix. She is a small one. She has been chewing on the cattle panels, to the point that it makes your ears hurt. She chews on them all the time. Is she lacking a mineral? She doesn't seem to have any other issues. I have been...

    Feeding a calf a bottle

I used the yogurt until I got the Probios here, and that has been working well. I would have tried the egg, but we didn't have any at the time. I have one that is still kind of runny, may try that though.

    Anyone use Spectam Scour-Halt?

LOL, it should tell you how much researching I have done of this board!! I figured that a homemade electrolyte probably couldn't possibly put in all the things that the manufactured did, but I thought I would see what others thought. I am currently waiting for these temps to DROP!! Hopefully...

    Anyone use Spectam Scour-Halt?

Bumping this post because... 1. It's hysterical 2. I am curious about the homemade electrolyte recipe on the first page. This seems a pretty good alternative, to the four dollars a bag stuff here. Anybody else tried it?

I have seen several recommendations for Spectum

I will try the Tractor Supply. There is one of those about an hour away, but I could get it same day, if they have it. Is it a lot of poop? No, not what I would consider a lot. And she didn't have a movement last night after eating, so I consider that pretty good. She did this yesterday...

I have seen several recommendations for Spectum

Nope, we don't have a walco. I couldn't believe that no one has it. I don't know if it is because we are a tiny town, or what. I found it online, so I am going to order some to have on hand. The poop is a thick run, if that makes sense. Like a pudding consistency. It is a brown color...

    I don't see an amount

Thanks! Yes, we have been watering down the barn that he is in, but not him. It's okay to mist him down? I gave him a dose of Electrolytes with one tablet of Immodium in it (it was tablet form) and I will go from there. I had given him a scour medication last night, but it didn't seem to be...
