    grass fed Holsteins

But also for a family milk cow you don't NEED 70+ pounds (9+ gallons/day!). Yes, grain is energy dense....giving Mama cow more energy to sustain her weight. When the grass is up and green, I get 1/2 cream 1/2 milk. On just hay (alfalfa or grass) I get about 1/4 cream. DON'T underestimate...

    What to Look for?

Bred my Jersey gal to a Hereford and she had a nice 75# strapping bull calf with no problem....he looks all Hereford...actually he looks like I picked a calf up from someone else to put on her! Will be some good freezer meat someday! ;-) Jay

    grass fed Holsteins

Feeding grain to dairy cattle is to help keep their weight up. GRASS and HAY make milk--not grain. Think about it....all those mama cows out in the pasture that never get any grain.....they make plenty of milk to keep their little ones growing and happy! Jay

    Cheese is amazing!

Yep, and sour cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese...butter, buttermilk.....and ALL kinds of cheeses, too! Amazing what one product can eventually become....with a little work and know-how! ;-) Jay

Price of Jersey or Guernsey calves at salebarn?

Jersey meat you won't find at the supermarket. The fat is yellow, not white due to the higher beta-carotene's. The meat is great, you just don't get near as much as from them as compared to a beef breed. Jay

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

Thanks for the info TR. I will look into it. As for my record keeping, I haven't done that...but I know eventually what comes around goes around. Like I said before, I do it for the cows--I already know these folks are knotheads. ;-) It'd be my luck I'd offer them $$ for the cows & they be...

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

Trust me everyone--if I had the extra $$ I would buy all of these cows, calves & bull in a heartbeat. (And do some serious weaning/worming/doctoring/culling!!) I am 'small time' and don't have that kind of money laying around. :( I don't know of any Ag loan programs, either. Ideas?!! I do...

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

Here's another point to get your undies in an uproar. They haven't weaned the calves that were born last January-thru-June! There's a nice 11-month old bull calf that is still nursing....in fact ALL of the calves are still nursing. I pointed that fact out to them the last time they were here...

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

My sentiments ***exactly***!! Cow was dead this morning--still no sign of the people that own the cows. Actually I'd of been more surprised if they would of showed up the day I called them. They had talked about giving up their lease this next spring & sell all their cattle. Lord I hope so...

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

These people doctor & diagnose their own stuff. Their philosophy is: it'll either get better or die. Period. The cow was having a hard time holding her head up yesterday eve, so I highly doubt if she made it thru the nite. I was just curious as to what caused the swelling, etc.

    Swollen Brisket/Down Cow

The neighboring pastured cows (note: absentee owners--I might see them once every 3 months) had a swollen brisket area (dewflap?) last week. It looked like a big football inbetween & just infront of her front legs. I could tell it was liquidy because it'd move around when she walked like 1/2...

Ummm, too many good ones to pick a favorite!! Dances with Wolves was pretty good, but I'm not sure if that's considered a 'western' movie. Beautiful scenery!!

    Jersey cattle

I have 2 Jersey steers that will eventually be in the freezer. My German Shepherd was bigger than my calves when I got them. No, Jersey's don't get overly tall/big. Mine are almost 1 year & they are about 45-46 inches at the hip and I think they are around 575-650#. (One is bigger than the...
