Thanks for posting the link for me. Hair test is $7 more, but hair sample will be so much easier since all but the calf are halter broke. It will be good to have it on file incase I do something stupid again!

    Angus, DNA for sire?

I had a calf that I am unsure of the sire on. AI'd the cow, 2 weeks later put a bull in, SAW her get bred, 30 days later let her run with the commercial cows, and 3 bulls. She just calved.......so 3 possible sires. I looked on the angus web site, but didn't find any info on parent testing...

    keeping water open in winter

I have corn stalk ground, and wheat re-growth to run my cattle on for free this fall/winter. Both pieces of land connect to my pasture. BUT.....I have drink ponds. (dug-out, stock dam...) what ever you call the hole in the ground with water. I need a way to keep the water open in a small...

Can a calf be too young to Vacc. for Black Leg?

The first two years I had cattle I lost a few calves that were less than 4 months of age to black leg. Since then the calves get black leg (Ultra bac 7) as soon as they are born. Never lost another one. I vaccinate them again when they are 3-4 months old, when they go to pasture, and at...

    My bull has ticks?

I was checking cows today, and a bull calf had a tick on his butt. I got it pulled off, but it was strange looking. Not like the blood filled dark ones you see on a dog. It was longer, skinnier, and flesh colored. Then I noticed the older bull had them in his "arm pit" area front and back...

    Bull Drowned

All of the bulls wintered together and got along fine then, so I was under the impression all would be well at turn out. I had the 3 year old and a yearling there to start with before turning in the 2 year old. They are on a pature of 170 acres, and I definitely need more than one or two bulls...

    Bull Drowned

Has anyone ever had a full grown cow drown? I turned my 2 year old bull in with the cattle and the 3 year old bull the other day, and they got to fighting. The bigger one pushed the other into the pond, which was not quite up to his back, and they continued to fight. The larger one would use...

    calf got kicked, broken tooth

I took the calf in to the vet yesterday. Kinda the same deal as Sidney. They had to cut some tissue out that was damaged, put a couple stitches in. One was so damaged there won't be an adult tooth, the other one they think may come in. (hope!) And as always it was one from my small...

    Calf won't nurse

Keep trying! Almost every year I have a "dummy" calf. Usually a bigger bull calf. Just not enough brains to know how to suck. It just takes alost of patience and a strong back. Put the cow in the head gate and keep putting the teat in the calves mouth. If after a few tries, milk and feed...

    calf got kicked, broken tooth

I had a new born calf that got kicked in the head by the cement feed bunk and it somewhat broke a front tooth. The tooth is broke and flipped down, but still in there, like the root and stub, and alot of blood. There is a tooth beside it that seemed to wiggle a little, but isn't busted like...

    left over dairy feed, disease

I live a mile from a 3,000 head dairy, and they have what they call "push out feed". The left over feed, pushed out of the barns twice a day, into a pile. They sell the feed for $15 a ton. I am a little leary on bringing it home to feed to my beef cows because of illnesses and disease from...

    Effects of negative SC EPD

I am hoping someone can help me understand the SC EPD, and the effects on my herd. My AI tech always tells me higher is better, since I am breeding for replacements, so the calves will mature faster. I see alot of bulls that I like the looks of and the numbers are good, except for a negative...

    extra teat, strange....

I have an angus heifer due to calve in the next couple days. Looking at her udder this am and noticed an extra teat. I have seen smaller extras on the back of the udder, but this one is of normal size, and between the front and rear quarter on the right side. Does this have the potential to...

    Fire ants

Update......I bought Sevin last night, and treated the plant. This morning I see nothing crawling. (Nobody had Acephate.) If I see anymore ants, the palm will get a nice misting of gas and go to the burn pile.

    Fire ants

A neighbor went to Brownsville, TX, and to "thank" me for watching his place, he brought me back a nice 5 foot palm tree.....full of fire ants! How do I kill them without killing the plant? I have been spraying the outside of the container with ant killer, but they are crawling out of the...

    frozen alfalfa

I have a small pasture with quite a bit of alfalfa in it. The cattle have been off for a few months and it has grown back quite well. We had a light frost a few nights ago, but the alfalfa is not discolored. Can I still cut it and put it up for hay? Or will it have nitrate poisoning potential?
