    No till drilling summer annuals

I plant a decent amount of Tifleaf 3 pearl millet just south of you in MS. It will grow like no other and produces good tonnage for wet hay. I would be cautious planting behind mowing because the heavy residue can make it difficult to get proper seed placement and allowing ample sunlight for the...

    Rye grass sowing.

A prepared seedbed that promotes good seed to soil contact will always out perform a no-till broadcast. I have never gave it much thought but I think the loose soil will absorb more moisture for germination compared to packer pasture. We have to be careful with any soil tillage and grazing due...

    Vetch

I can’t help you much but the vetch we had on our leased farm never seem to do much until spring. We are in Northwest Mississippi

    Balansa clover

We planted about 100acres of Annual Ryegrass and Balansa, it done well for us and came back good this year on it’s own. How pasture was a little low in PH and P & K and it still done good.

    Baleage wrap cost

I have not seen it in person as I have only seen one dairy guy that had some inline wheat bales and that is it. I have read it in various university papers, YouTube and seen photos.

    Baleage wrap cost

Good point on the last statement, that hadn’t occurred to me at all.

    Baleage wrap cost

I do plan to purchase a wrapper, I have looked and asked about renting with no success and I’m like on liking the control of when I can have it. My only thought on the hugger is able to stack them 3 high on the flat side, if not for that need I certainly wouldn’t entertain the thought. I didn’t...

    Baleage wrap cost

So this coming summer I plan to put up about 500-600 (4’x5.5’) of ryegrass and pearl millet bales. I’m fairly certain the first cut and all of the millet will be put up wet but hoping 1 or 2 cuts of the ryegrass can go up dry. We don’t really have the option for an in-line wrap due to rolling...

Advice on dwarf Sudan and pearl millet

Did you harvest it with disc cutter or moco? I haven’t been around any baled SS so I’m concerned how the taller stalks will bale.

Advice on dwarf Sudan and pearl millet

How did your pearl millet and SS turn out? I have used millet for a cover crop to help clean up a field and been astonished by how fast it will germinate and get to 30”. Plan to do about 45 acres in baleage this coming summer.

Chance of rain tomorrow should i fertilize the ryegrass or not

I think you and I were on the same page regarding the very low possibility of Urea becoming volatile and that is likely what they were referring too. I was just asking because you never know what someone else may teach you.

Chance of rain tomorrow should i fertilize the ryegrass or not

Well I’m 100% with y’all on having faith in the weather man. I reckon my thoughts were what is the harm if fertilizer is broadcasted then the shower is missed?

    Analyze this Hay

Butch, thats kinda my thoughts as well but here's one other factor that caused me to test. I noticed their piles are a lot firmer than I would like to see, not horse crap but also not a pie. Usually they arent quite that firm on this hay. I market my feeders as grass-fed and finished but I can...

    Weaning weights?

So if I assume an average BW of 85lbs, it seems 2.3 to 2.4ADG is the norm from yalls data so far. Not every year is lush so I understand that is a factor as well. I am working on improving all of our pastures and adding legumes but really focusing on a 35acre weaning paddock of hybrid Bermuda...

What breed are they? Spring or fall calving?

    Weaning weights?

I initially posted this in the nutrition forum but thought it may receive better responses here. So I’m curious to what y’alls typical weaning weights are and how is your program setup. I’m always interested to learn from others and their experiences. We are typically mid to upper 5 weight and...

So I’m curious to what y’alls typical weaning weights are and how is your program setup. I’m always interested to learn from others and their experiences. We are typically mid to upper 5 weight and mid to lower 5 weight for steers and heifers, respectively. We start calving February 8th on paper...
