    Cow Showing signs of calving

Sounds like she is in the early phases of calving. Depends on the cow, but it can vary how long it lasts. Keep a close eye on her and if anything changes dont be afraid to re-check her. Jenna

    No glove?

I'm fairly new to it too, but I've been doing some for my sister. I always use a long glove when palpating and AI'ing. I put a real tight fitting nirtrile glove over the sleeve for better sensotivity since I have small hands and the sleeves are huge :( I'm more familiar with cattle ai, but no...

    Funny picture

I have palpated mares for my sister out in the pasture, but only certain ones. Some mares are just not safe to do this way. I've heard of people using lidocane in the lube, does this make a differance?

    Who ai's

Just curious if most artificial inseminators are male or female. Some of our neighbors wont let a male near their cattle, only female technicians. Anything to it? We've been busy ai'ing the beef, all 450 of them. we try to breed them in groups of 30-50. Me and mom (mostly me) do all the ai work...

    Equine AI

Hello again, I finally made the jump to the world of equine, kind of. My sister owns a stable, and has been kind of wanting me to give equine ai a try. I'm very familiar with cattle ai, but this was a new thing for me. Since reproducion was my major, I have always wanted to give equine ai a try...

Have many of you had twins this year? (beef or dairy). This was our third set of twins this month. Luckily they are all doing good. The first calf was quite big and came the right way. We never thought there could be another calf in there, but supprisingly there was. I've gottan into the habbit...

    Schools out!!

Didn't even notice the hand right away, must of been mom. My brother took the picture for a project in his ag class. And actually by the time we were done, my shirt was fairly clean yet. (just a lucky day I guess) I bred about half and mom did the rest. Also, I wouldn't think of breeding the...

    Breeding mare

Yeah, I have alot to learn about equine ai. But I have signed up for a class on ai and palpation of horses next week. Our local vet is sponsering it, so it should be a good start. It seems like a good thing to get into in this area since no one really does it. My sister knows others who would...

    Breeding mare

First of all, I have to admit I don't know too much about horses, (mostly cattle). This leads to my qeustion. My older sister who is horse crazy was wondering if I would ai one of her mares. She breeds and sells percherons, and wants to experiment with artificial insemination. I'm getting pretty...

    Palpation

I have a few more q's I thought I'd ask while I am sitting here waiting for a couple cows to calve at the farm. I've started to do some pregnancy checking by palpation. We only glanced over this in school, but I have been learning from my mom who has been a very good teacher. So far, I check the...

    HUMMMM

We tried net wrap on our hay and oat staw this year since we bought a new Deere baler that had net wrap cover edge. It seemed to make nice bales, and the straw that was outside stayed dry. The first layer was crusted, but after that it was just as good as the day it was baled.Have not had much...

    AI questions

Luckily, all the dairy cow ai is done in a warm (50 degree) area considering it is -10 outside right now. Yeah, I get my practice, but my mom also helps out when I am not around sometimes. She's been doing ai longer than I have, but I have mostly taken over now.Between breeding and taking care...
