    swollen udders

These are beef calves and this is not udder development. This is just a noticable swelling. Does not seem to be bothering calves but it is noticable. And, like I said, maybe 4 calves out of a hundred, so not very many. Only noticed in 1 steer so far. Might try to get a picture.

    swollen udders

We've had at least 3 or 4 calves (out of about 100) develop swollen udders or swollen teats. We've seen it on steers and heifers. Calves are 4 and 5 weights and are still on cows. Any ideas what may be causing this? Some type of bacterial infection?

    cold weather effect on synch

We pulled cidrs and gave lut shots on saturday to 12 heifers, some of which had been cycling, some maybe not. None have stood yet and no stickers have been rubbed. It got cold here the last few nights, down in the teens. Has anybody had any experience with cold weather affecting synchronization?

Friends new yearling bull what ya think?

I think this is what I was getting at about 3 pages back. Obviously each parent provides half the genes. So adding the total breed percentages of each parent and dividing by 2 gives you the most likely breed makeup of the offspring but you could not know the exact makeup. If a 50/50 baldy...

Friends new yearling bull what ya think?

Not to add fuel to the fire, but I think Jovid's point is valid. Although I don't understand where his math is coming from, I think his point is that after the F1 generation, you dont know what percentage you have. When you cross two baldies, you are most likely to have to have a 50% angus...

    castrating question

No, I'm talking about the outer membrane around each testicle. After you cut the scrotum, and the testicles are visible, some people just pull them straight out but we have always sliced the outer membrane and then pull the testicle out. We dont cut the cord, all we do is basically touch the...

    castrating question

Yeah, what I am talking about is after you cut the end off and the nuts are in exposed. We have always sliced what I call the "membrane" that is around each nut and it pops on out and then you slowly pull the nut out so as not to break the cord off too short. Some people just pull the nuts...

    castrating question

For those who cut their calves, how many of you pull the nut straight out and how many of you cut the first layer of "membrane" from around the nut. I hope this makes sense. We have always sliced the "membrane" and then pulled the nut out but I've seen it done by just pulling the nut straight...

    Simmental bull?

95% sure that's who we're going to use. I didn't mention his name because I wanted to get honest opinions, but since the first response was in favor of him, i guess we're on the same page. Not all of the herd is heavy enough angus. Some of the cows go back to or are out of a heterozygous...

    ET questions

I was just wondering how hard it is to learn to transfer embryos. I know the basics of how everything works but was just curious how difficult it is. I've been AI'ing part of our herd for about five years but wanted to know how far of a leap is it from AI'ing your stuff to transferring frozen...
