    My first tractor!

Yep. C-113 gasoline or distillate engine (depending on which carb it's outfitted with).

    My first tractor!

Sadly, it doesn't have a carburetor or any of the linkages. Sourcing an affordable carburetor and a few other necessary parts is a must before I can make the transition from "yard art" back to tractor.

    My first tractor!

Fair enough. However, the appeal of a complete tear down is rooted in a desire to learn, not just to have an operational tractor. It's no coincidence that I became an engineer. I was the little boy that had torn apart and reassembled his Christmas toys before dinner was served. Besides...

    My first tractor!

You bet I will. I pulled the drain plug from the oil pan and nary a drop of oil fell. I haven't even tried to turn the crank because I bet the cylinders are dry, so I don't know if it's seized or not. I'm actually going to go ahead and break the engine down to make sure it was reassembled...

    My first tractor!

I finally bought my first tractor over the weekend - a 1941Farmall A. It's not currently running as it needs a carburetor, but I'm pretty excited about the potential. The previous owner was in the midst of a rebuild when he passed. He bequeathed it to his sister who sold it to me for $450...

Looking for Fort Worth Area CPA with Ag Knowledge

    I'm out!

Well, I got the check today. About what I expected, but not quite what I would have hoped for selling 31 head. To preface this, my momma cows were nothing but hide and bones with 8 out of 10 being 8 years and older. The younger heifers and calves were a bit better looking, but will certainly...

    Outrageous hay prices

My $0.02 is that this just another example of the disgustingly extreme level of greed in our society, created by our obsession with money and worldly possessions. We're all guilty of it to some extent and we'll all suffer for it, in this life or the next. :(

    I'm out!

They're currently awaiting the Friday sale at Gainesville. It'll cost me a bit to feed, water, and bunk 'em for three nights, but I figure they'll appreciate it. Might help 'em look a little better come Friday morning. It's the least I can do for what joy they've given me.

    I'm out!

Hired a crew to come haul my herd off to the sale this morning. Things are bad here in Texas this year and I just couldn't keep going any longer. It was a tough decision, but the best one I could make for my wife and I - and for the cattle. $100 a day to hay 'em was just too much. When it...

Would you ever hire an Agricultural Consultant?

After reading some of your responses, I definitely need to reconsider how I describe my services. To elaborate, I was thinking less "how-to raise cattle" and more infrastructure planning and design; agricultural waste handling and disposal; animal record keeping; and environmental permitting...

Would you ever hire an Agricultural Consultant?

As a precursor to this post, I am not trying to advertise or gain publicity for a business; I am simply gauging interest in a business model that interests me. If the moderators do not agree with this post, please remove it and email me saying as much. That said, here we go: I have always had...

    Cattle dropping like a rock?

We all knew there had to be a ceiling to the high prices. Corn is high. Fuel is high. I'm surprised the run lasted as long as it did.

    Update from Hill County, TX

Met with a vet this evening and the early diagnosis is laminitis in the yearlings and acute interstitial pneumonia in some of the cows. They are malnourished and have lice pretty bad. He's going to consult with a couple of the other vets in the clinic and they'll make a recommendation tomorrow...

    Update from Hill County, TX

So if I can't load 'em up and haul 'em, would it be worth my effort to fence off an area, shred all the grass within that area, and put 'em on hay?

    Update from Hill County, TX

Thanks Texas Bred. That's who we called. I am awaiting a call from one of their vets (don't know if it will be Bud or not) to schedule a time to come out and check the herd ASAP.

    Update from Hill County, TX

Ladies and gentlemen, it seems I have royally screwed up. We moved cattle from drought stricken West Texas to the lush pastures of Hill County last weekend. A quick check of the cattle on Monday night proved they were super happy grazing in their new home. As often happens, life gets in the...

Hauling cattle and life lessons learned...

Update on 106: She delivered a stillborn calf today. Vet came and pulled him. Dad said it was a big bull and his front legs were buckled under him on the way out. Hopefully that was what had her down. Don't know if he was fully baked or if she aborted him to save herself. Hopefully we'll find...
