    Swollen Hooks

Hi TCRanch, vet checked her lymph nodes(normal) and her appetite is fine....hooks may look normal in this picture but I don't recall them being quite this large and rounded, seems to be doing a bit better after 3 days on the Miloxicam....really hope she doesn't have to go to the green pastures...

    Swollen Hooks

I've got a 6 year old cow that has been walking very slowly, lifting her feet up off the ground while standing and seems to have extremely swollen hooks. Has a bit of a hunch in her back too. Vet gave me Miloxicam to give her daily for a week because he thinks she had some kind of trauma. The...

    Market for Miniatures

Well, after being away for quite a while....I ended up working with a lady from Scotland and I now have a small here (9) full-blood registered Shetland cows. They are wonderfully docile, medium-sized, manageable horn size, and multi-colored. Will be harvesting 2 steers this year so stay tuned on...

    nose flap weaning

I used the yellow spiky kind that has a wing nut to adjust tightness. Seems to have worked well. Although it takes them a little while to figure out how to keep it out of the way when eating grass and hay.

    wheezing Calf

Sorry to resurrect a 2 year old post but a search revealed this thread and I'm seeing a similar condition in a 2 mo. old heifer calf (not a bottle calf). Seems very healthy, no mucus, nurses, eating grass, growing like a weed, etc. When I show up in the pasture early mornings and the herd trots...

    Scratched Eye

I have a 7 month old heifer that I just noticed was keeping her left eye about half shut. I put her in the head gate and noticed the white wound which looks like a bad scratch. As you can see in the picture, it's located at the edge of the cornea. There was a small about of dried mucus but for...

    Grey discharge one eye

That actually makes a lot of sense considering the butt nugget that sold me these supposedly "clean" round bales are riddled with thorny dewberry vines. My introduction to raising cattle is full of new learning experiences ;)

    Grey discharge one eye

Thanks DMF ...Yeah, I talked to my vet and he said it's likely just an irritation from dust, dirt, or some other debris, maybe a minor scratch during the trailer ride. I'm going to make up a batch of home made saline solution and flush it out good with a syringe. I'll try to get a picture before...

    Grey discharge one eye

I have an 8 month old bull calf I just bought that has a slight discharge coming from the left eye. The discharge looks like mucus and is greyish in color but the eye itself looks clear and healthy. The right eye has no discharge at all. Is this something that will clear up by itself, or should...

    Branding questions

I got my brand registered with the county several weeks ago. My question is more around the fact that I've got a cow and a heifer with 2 different brands from their previous owners. I also have one heifer calf I can brand with my own registered brand. I've taken pictures of the brands on their...

    Branding questions

Newb questions: When you buy cattle that have an existing brand already, what's the common practice? Just put your own next to it? I'm about to order my electric branding iron with 2 simple alphanumeric characters. For the same price I can get the letters sized anywhere between 2 and 4 inches...

    Market for Miniatures

Thanks for the comments, it validates what I was finding out. ...and Thanks Hoss, I had thought of that approach (getting a few minis at some point) especially if I get into making cheese and butter as we'll be homesteading on the same property in a few years.
