    Broomsedge

Bushhog it in May and graze the heck out of it. Cows will eat it when it's young and green. It's not their favorite but they'll eat it. It hates hoof pressure and lime. I have about a 100 acres of it and it's always in the areas where the cows don't loaf. Away from the water tank and...

    Low Input Sermons ?

I've tried general rotational grazing on 4-5 pastures, it works better than continuous grazing. Quicker rotational grazing dividing the 4-5 paddocks into 16 paddocks works even better. MOB grazing at 50K lbs per acre works better....200k lb per acre works better still. What you have to consider...

    help deciding on which grass.

I'm in west Ga with a mix grass of Tift 9 and Coastal. I've never had any issue with cows gaining on it. Some years the Bahia is stronger, some years the coastal flexes. I've got gamma and Johnson grass growing in the ditch and I hope it spreads. Mixed grass hay is hard to beat if it's cut...

    100-130 HP Range

I want an open cab tractor in this HP range for a few target implement uses. I'm looking for an older tractor, preferably under 15k. I don't need a loader and I'm not picky about the color? Suggestions. I've had recommendations for IH 66 and 86 Series and JD 4000 series. Thanks gents

    Chicken Litter

Best time to spread chicken litter imo is in the fall on fescue or winter annuals like rye/ryegrass/oats/wheat. I even get a little pop clear into the next season with Bermuda/Bahia/crabgrass in the same field. You lose a little nitrogen, but you can put out litter near anytime and it remains...

    Live Cattle & Boxed Beef

And perhaps I should clarify....is the 182.00 per hundred weight mean that the price for one finished carcass....cold, cut into primals, neatly retail wrapped, and in the "box"? If so, how is the packer making a profit? If he's got a carcass that is 67 percent of the hoof, then 122.00 on the...

    Live Cattle & Boxed Beef

Looking for some edge-a-mucation gents. So I'm tracking Live Cattle at $122.50 on 1400lb steers with average dressed steer weights at 935. 935/1400 is roughly 67% $122.50/.67 = $182.83. Boxed Beef is 182.00-189.00. Where is the profit and what am I missing? Hides.....offal? Thanks

    grazing cattle in woods

You get enough animal density and rest, maybe supplement with mulch hay, etc, I think you might be pleasantly surprised. You can turn most any ground that get moisture and some sunlight into a viable grazing environment. It may not carry the same as as bottomland but you still get value out...

    Local Southern States Closing

That part of Georgia has a high density of chicken houses and wherever you have chicken houses you usually see high stocking rates on cattle (and high stocking rates on thistle...hahaha). They made good money. That store was a magnet for farmers from a fulcrum out 40 miles. I recall talking...

    Local Southern States Closing

I worked at a Southern States in College, they bought out the old Gold Kist coop, when GK decided to be exclusively in the chicken business. I always thought they had a pretty good business model and offered more useful services than TSC. The ability to have one source spraying, fertilizer...

    Haylage

I'm wondering if anyone has experience on the capitalized cost of producing a bale of haylage if wrapped in sleeves verses individually? I understand the great "depends" component. I'm just looking for an index relative to hay because I have a gentleman that's doing it now on a small scale in...

    Forsaking income for contentment

You got that right CB. It was one of the chief culprit's in the housing boom...along with a whole litany of bad government subsidies. I remember a few years ago the single greatest metaphor for this phenomenon was the condo craze on the Gulf Coast. Developer would start up with a high rise...

    Forsaking income for contentment

If you need 900 cows to be profitable you should stick to 25.... Preserve your time and seek your investment opportunity elsewhere. Clearly cattle does not constitute your highest and best use of Land. Land in our part of the world is probably the most overpriced, over speculated segment on the...
