    New and Old

I used to be a 'regular,' but I spent some years away from Cattle Today and now I'm back. I learned a lot here. Not sure how much I can contribute after my long absence, but I've long since tired of Facebook, so here I am! Thought I'd best rekindle my membership on the "Hi, I'm new here"...

    My Vacation

It has been about 15 years since I’ve been anywhere other than the grocery store. So when my brother and his wife asked me to join them on a trip to Costa Rica, I said yes, if there’s anyway I can manage it, I will go! I did, and now I’m back. It was magnificent, absolutely magnificent! I...

    Need help ID'ing this critter

I know it's mangy and scraggly, but a friend of mine killed it in his chicken house. Is it a fox or a coyote? I'm thinking fox because of the red, but the legs seem too long for a fox.

    My Life as a Turkey

Since today is Thanksgiving Day, there's been a lot of talk about turkeys and traditions, etc., in the news recently. There's a blog I visit regularly about wildlife, mostly birds, and this was posted there. For those of you who don't do the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or football, this...

Easy Flank Steak Recipe (and "the rules")

I don't like to cook. So if I do something different, it has to be easy and, it goes without saying, delicious. I've got some frozen flank steak that I need to use, but I am clueless. Before you offer any help, please read my rules: 1. The recipe can't go beyond one page. Short attention...

    Coccidia

My three weanlings, 8 months old now, were diagnosed with coccidia (fecal test) about a month ago. They received treatment level of CORID in their water and are now in their 3rd week of the prevention level (1/2 strength CORID in their water). Thankfully, their manure has firmed up; their...

    What if.......?

I'm interested in your comments on this situation: A rents a pasture from B and A puts several cows in it to graze. C owns property next door to B. C's bull breaks the fence (4-strand barbed wire) and breeds A's cows. The bull has done this several times. I don't know if there is any...

    Trophy Bear

For you hunters out there: Here's a photo of a 432# black bear shot with a compound bow on Oct. 11 by a 17 year old boy while deer hunting. The information with the photo says that he "passed up several shot opportunities in order to let the bear get broadside to his treestand and offer a...

    Dexter Weanlings

Here are pics of my Dexter weanlings (2 steers and 2 heifers)...just separated them from their moms this morning. Three are 6 months old and one is slightly over 4 months (hated pulling him also, but didn't want to wean just one by himself). Hope I don't regret that. They'll be confined for...

Two natural disasters in 5 days?

I live in Mineral, VA, home of the earthquake of 8/23. That was "interesting." Don't think I'll ever forget that roaring rumbling sound. Lots of things falling off walls and out of cupboards, etc. Aftershocks have been just as frightening and we even had two 2.2's yesterday. We were very...

    Returning member

Hi everybody! Not exactly new, but I’ve been MIA for quite a while. It’ll take a while to get slowly reacquainted. I think I was one of the first Dexter people on this board and now I see lots of others. I guess that’s a good thing. Anyway, hello to everyone once again!

Can anyone tell me what might cause cracks in hooves and how to treat this? I think more than one hoof is involved.

Finishing weight -- horns vs. no horns

Is it realistic that an animal without horns would weigh 100# more when finished than one with horns (assuming same breed and same age at slaughter)? Does growing horns take that much away from the animal?
