He's certainly one of the biggest calves for his age that I've ever had, especially from a moderate sized momma (1400 lbs?)

Really like this calf. Like his width, bone and base width.
For me it is too early too tell but I have some question about the amount of gut he will have. I like nuts, butts and guts. Regardless at this point a good prospect that deserves the chance to develop.

I'm trying to get a bit deeper chests.. I have the width I want in most of the calves now

I'm not really sure what breed or bulls in particular I'm going to get to accomplish that yet.. I would like to get a Salers influenced animal in again, but that won't be helping with depth... Perhaps another Shorthorn?

I saw this cow (She's a Muridale Shorthorn).. She's a beauty

I would agree, maybe just from looking at Angus based cattle in my own herd but I would prefer to see more depth and width through his back to go along with the set of pants he has.

As to another post Nesi has on here. Muridale does have a great herd of Shorthorns. I still prefer the Angus cattle for here...……… with a touch of exotic added. The right Saler are good cattle too.

I think he will fill in later, both sides of his family grew to have pretty good capacity... I just realized this pic is both of his grandmas (Maternal in front, Saler x Herf at 12 years old, and paternal behind, Shorthorn x Herf at 4 years old)


The day before his sire was born, that side of the family always had really big bellies



G creek, what kind of "Exotic" do you like? Do you know the Albeitz family? They used to have a lot of Saler blood in their herd, complete with horns, and those mommas would really defend their calves.. Like Bison, they'd have the calves in the center of the group and work together against predators.. Then they got Angus, no more horns, and not the same instinct either, they started to lose 10-15 calves a year to wolves.

I can still see some of that Saler influence in Zeus's mother.. She's really friendly with me, but she sees *everything* and I wouldn't want to be on her bad side, she's got that predator stomping look to her. Few years back in the winter she was on the wrong side of the fence at feeding time, the BOTTOM 2 strands of barbed wire were broken, only way I can see that happening is she chased something with her head to the ground.
I'm sure you've seen these pics before... I've heard all sorts of stories about where these pics were taken, some said it was in BC, others in Washington or Oregon... Good mommas though

I did a reverse image search, came up with a couple articles... One said it was Kettle Valley BC, mentioned a fellow "Wayne"

Weaning day today, 204 days old.. and first time on the halter... No big deal, tied him to a post and after 2-3 minutes he settled into it, gave him some scritches and he was all happy

He looks like he is breaking nicely, why do you give him so much rope. I only give them six inches so they learn when i hold them they can only pull six inches and stop.

I didn't feel like winching him in 10 ft.. maybe once he's settled down from weaning I'll do that
