I haven't added anything to my gun safe for a while, thinking about a .223. What would your model of choice be?

Thanks,
Alan

Depends how you are gonna use it. Target,Varmint, burning ammo. There's lots of rifles and lots of configurations.

Ruger ranch,,,,not accurate.

Thompson center,,,,,REALLY not accurate.

AR accurate but not practical for a truck gun

Rem 700 accurate and practical.

MY FAVORITE is anything from Savage ,,,,super accurate and affordable. Plus lots of choices from target to light weight carry.

Are you talking a rifle or a Contender? The last .223 Contneder I had would group just over a half inch at 100 yards as long as I did my part. The only T/C rifle I ever had was a .50 Hawken and it would still put all the balls touching at 100 yards.

A Remington Model Seven in 223 is a wonderful truck gun. It's a slightly shorter version of the 700.

I agree with dun, Contender pistols are generally very accurate.

I have a T/C prohunter that will group somewhere around 18in at 100yds with the 50cal barrel. If you mount a rifle barrel on it it will group under an in every time however the groups are never in the same place. The freakin hanger systems on those things stink.

Never have touched the Encore frames. I haven;t shot a T/C facotry barrel in many years. All of mine are from Bullberry, never have had anything from Fred that wouldn;t shoot under an inch.

When the shell casing ejects in the cab its not a good thing. It can and will break your back window out, maybe even the side windows but I don't know that for sure. :dunce:

:lol2: When we spotlight grain fields I always shoot out my window over the side mirror. Some one, usually my dad, spot lights from the passenger side. Its a mathmatical fact that if you shoot over that mirror.... the AR will eject the shell of the inside of a 2010 Z-71 windshield... not hit your passenger... and land in the passenger side door pocket 8 out of 10 times. :D What other gun can you get that kind of consistency from?

AR15..... I have one in 5.56 and 6.8. Every one should have one or two. ;-)

Why is the AR not practical for a truck gun?

Size, configuration, and my burning desire to NOT have a semi-automatic rifle rattling around the cab with me.

other than that nuthin much.

Size... Last time I checked my bolt rifles were longer than both my ARs.

Confguration... Its different if you have never been around one but they come in every shape and size. Some lend better to carrying than others.

Semi-Auto... thats a personal issue.

Pros:
You can carry as many rounds as you can muscle in a magazine if you have to get out and walk. When your shooting at multiple tarkets its much easier to hold on them with a semi-auto than to have to take your eye off the target with a bolt gun. They have really good resale value. Once you get one you will wonder why you didn't have one the past 20yrs. If you drive up on a drug deal going down in your pasture you are atleast some what on the same playing field. There are lots of accessories and junk if you go that route.

Cons:
They do require a good cleaning as will any semi-auto with moving parts. You are looking at starting out in the neighborhood of $1K to get a good one. They can be addicting and you will end up spending tons of money because you need one in your truck. Then you need one with a scope for hunting. Then you need one with a Night Vision scope and supressor. Then you grandson needs one so yall can shoot together, :D

ARs are not for every one... but atleast be realistic about what they can and can not do.

exactly and they fit in the gun rack like they should.

i have been around plenty and they don't fit MY need. I want something that is at least kind of safe in the truck and the AR doesn't fit that criteria for ME.

NO that's a safety issue. Nothing more nothing less.

I am very realistic about what they can do and if you want one or 20 good for you but I don't want one in the truck with me if it's not cased. That's all!

I have an AR heavy barrel with a collapsable stock that I carry with me allot. I have an aimpoint display type sight on it for quick target aquisition. It makes a good truck gun when you need something fast. It is short and with that type of sight accurate enough for what I use it for. I have a tatical loop sling on it for riding around on the 4-wheeler. It keeps it across my chest for very fast access. For serious accuracy I would go with the Model 700 or Savage with an accu-trigger. I like the Model 7 as well. It is short, light and accurate. I have one in 7mm-08 that has been the doom of many deer and coyotes.

This is my AR15 in 6.8 @100yrds with 110gr Barnes TSX.
