Took some calves and a cow that had a ugly bag off that was bred and due in march.. The sale barn stopped preg checking cows... :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :mad: :mad: :mad: Had I knew that I would have sold her local.

Craig what Toad is saying is true. I turned Toad onto that barn. I would venture to say its the best barn in the state to sale at that I have seen. I just wont sell any bred cows there but I tell ya what I will go there and maybe buy some and then get preg checked lol This barn is EXCELLENT to sale calves at.

Any barn that does not preg check cows are not getting the worth out of them for the customer. Without age and preg check they are just a slaughter cow.

VA My friend took some of his and hauled mine for me and they told him until further notice. One of the guys there said its because of how many cattle they are moving. I can understand the last load I carried got there at 745 and waited a hour to get unloaded I was truck 91 I think or 92.

This is true Kenny but they didn't put her in the slaughter pen.

Any barn that does not preg check cows are not getting the worth out of them for the customer. Without age and preg check they are just a slaughter cow.

Definitely lost out on a few hundred bucks.

LOL don't forget the lil people that told you about that now Kenny ;-) I asked toad was he going to Lynchburg if I knew that was going to happen I would sold him that 1300 bred cow for 1 a lb before I let someone else reap the benefits of getting a free cow

Thanks Sky, I'm only about a mile from Springlake stockyard, I bet we start seeing a few more cows come through the sale ring now.

I have never known Lynchburg to preg check cows. That being said I have never asked them to either. I see all of you guys talking about how your sale barn runs and best I can tell it doesn't run much like that. I hauled a load today for a customer with a few cull cows. I have never had them do anything but weigh them and put them in a pen. Also have noticed a lot of you talk about them weighing them in the ring. There & Stanton the only sales I haul to they weigh them when you unload them and that's it as far as I know. Never have time to stay for the sale but wonder do they give a farm/source name or any preg. info. Like you guys describe your barn doing. To my knowledge they don't. Have seen them sort particular cows off to the side due to the nod of a head from a regular I know pretty well. There seems to be a lot that happens behind the scenes and one of these days Kenny I am going to track you down and learn how a sale barn really works.

Here it is up to the seller if they want them sold as slaughter by the lb or aged and preg checked and sell by the head. A 1300 lb cow that is in the slaughter if she is pretty good might bring $1.10 a lb bringing $1430. Same cow if she checked 5 years old and 7 months bred might bring $2,500. Most people will not take a chance on one not checked. Here it cost $6 extra to preg check, so if the cow is decent why not do it.

Smokin I have never sold any preg cows at the barn before so I can't answer as to if they ever did. I know that blackstone preg checks and announces it. I have never stayed and watched my cattle sell ever. I drop off they weigh and I watch them grade and I haul arse and wait for the check. I never waste my time at a sale at Lynchburg stuff is too high for my blood but now I know they don't preg check I may go up there and take my chances. Most cattlemen will tell you why they are selling a cow If you are around when they unload. That's why I try to get there early.

yea It was requested. However, she was not put in slaughter pen but in regular back to farm pens.

Ours almost always has thaf many going through and the still manage to get it done with only one vet onsite. I guess we are spoiled heres. I thought all barns did it. As for the scales how do you know they are telling you the right weight if you dont see it yourself?

I suspect Lynchburg would rather just sell in larger groups and move more cattle. I know at Spring Lake it can take a long time to sell each bred cow one at a time. I know its already not uncommon for Lynchburg to sell until 5am, maybe they just don't want to make it longer?
