Sorry to interject into this lively conversation but at the mention of Winnipeg, i just had to write.
I live 2.5 hours north, about 220 km or 160 miles(?). We grow corn up here for silage. Not me personally but guys around here and they do well. tonnage...not a clue.

Somn, I do believe you should be studying corn yields.

I'm trying to tell you there is so much difference in variities. And weather conditions,

For instance the dry land corn not far to the South and East of me got some good showers in June, the corn shoulder high, doing great on the 4th of July. Then the rain stopped. Hot, dry and windy July and poor pollination. Lots of plant and poor grain yield.

Bet this really confuses you :???: How can this be :P

Well lets see if I understand you right you claim to have had no rain all summer You also claim to get 100 bpa corn yield with the corn yielding 12 bu to 1 ton. You still plant your corn in 40's and it is full of weeds and you claim those are late season weeds that came because the roundup wore off. All that is even harder to believe than that person who claimed to get a alfalfa yield of 20 tons per acre per cutting. You might be able to fool the foolish but your not going to fool a guy who plants 3100 acres of field corn every year and cuts 500 acres or more every year for silage. I leave 6 rows uncut for every variety I plant I know how many tons came off per acre in silage and I combine the six rows and I know how many bushels came off those rows also all across the scale any other way is just a guess. 12 to 1 you aren't ever gonna get. Even the very newest hybrids made specifically for corn on corn planting resulting in very little forage yields will never get to 12 to 1 at 70%. Thats just BS just admit you are making up figures as you go and be done with it. No shame in telling the truth there is however in telling lies.

The corn is dry, husks, stalks, dropping leaves and tassels.

What do you think the ratio of grain is to other plant matter.

Well if telling the truth causes a lose of credibilty I guess for once you might be right. I've told the truth so that makes me less credible according to you. If I were you I wouldn't address the credibilty issue to much you have made the claim you put up 600 tons silage with 7500 bu. corn to go along with it 12bu. to 1 ton you claim. In your mind roundup wears off and planting 75 acres in 40's that is full of weeds somehow makes you an expert in hybrid seed corn. I can't wait to hear all your knowledge about herbicides. How was it again you measured your silage and corn by the use of a scale or did you just guess and throw out a number? By the way you are welcome to stop by anytime and see how corn and cattle farming is really done. In fact if you come by on Monday I will be needing a auger wagon operator I will be starting to harvest some downed corn on the newest farm in Iowa.

Got the last pile of silage piled and covered in the dark and rain last night. :D :D

I put up some 600 tons with this outfit.

$3200 tractor, .650 chopper, .500 wagon [I use 3 wagons] The others are rear unloaders $400. each.

I guess your idea of The corn is dry, husks, stalks, dropping leaves and tassels is slightly different than mine picture to me looks like everything on the plant is intact I would guess around 70%.
