COMPLETE COW HERD DISPERSAL


230 Mixed bred cows 2-10 years old

80 cow/calf pairs

3 purebred Hereford bulls

3 purebred Angus bulls

40 mixed feeders 400-600 lbs vaccinated & weaned

other consignments:


12 Black strs & hfrs 600-700 lbs GLA Vac2

75 Blackcross strs & hfrs 500-625 lbs GLA Vac2

It's only the start, no matter where anyone on here lives. Your going to see more and more in the coming months.

I now have 1 neighbor that is totally out, one the will be out this fall, one that is going to cut the cowherd in half and two that are definitely mulling it over. This is just within a couple miles of me. Extrapolate outwards and the result doesn't seem much different.

Sure wish I lived closer. Around here the only cows being sold are cullcows. Looking to pick up some more cows but hard to find.

I'm with you. This farm is going to get a big payday, but it'll be his last assuming he never buys back in. Could be an estate sale, but I thought it was worth asking around ....

Not knowing the situation it's hard to say, like you say it could be someone retiring or needing to sell out for some reason or an estate sale. If not I don't see it as a smart move.

Exactly, it's if your getting out because they are high now and your hoping to get back in when they get cheaper, that's what I can't agree with.

Yea or even retiring. Their is several guys around here in 70's bad health getting out they said these prices made the decision for them I asked one if he will miss fooling with cattle he has well over 200 hd and he said to me something I will never forget " Do you like being tortured " I thought he was being funny then I thought about all the BS shenanigans you deal with when it comes to cattle and time spent fooling with them or making hay and said this man has a point. I am pretty sure if I live that long and fool with them till im in my 70's I will feel the same way.

I have a good friend who is 76 years old has 2 replaced hips and has to walk with 2 canes. He is still running 100 head on a 1000 acre place and has about another 300 acres and a couple small herds. He keeps all the fence up himself and brushogs half of all of it every year. Also catches all the calves cuts the bulls and notches every right ear. You might have to see the place and everything that this guy does to appreciate it, but it's more than most young folks do and this guy is in pain every day, but he will do it till he dies. that's the way I see myself going about it. I guess it all depends on why a person is in this business and what they get out of doing it.

Business vs hobby 2 totally different things. I fool with cattle as a hobby. I like it but if im in constant pain and its beating me up I will let it go. My life is worth more than a stinking cow :lol2: However I will fool with cattle as long as my health will allow. Life is WAY too short to suffer especially if you do not need the $$$ and only do it because of pride.

I told my wife no more than 20 cattle now I have 4 times that and its kicking my butt and wifes mouth is beating up my ear drums about it. I can only hope to still be fooling with cattle when im 70 You are young and healthy I am sure you will make it and be one of those guys at the sale barn that cant hear themself fart and take 5 minutes to climb on and off a tractor and still farming :lol:

I feel the same way you do about it, I just only hope that feeling doesn't change some 40+ years later. I'm like SKY, definitely more of the hobby side for me, but part of the hobby IS the business side of the cattle industry I enjoy being a small part of and observing and learning about.

If I was 70+ years old with 100+ cow herd and went to ZERO cows, I'd be bored as heLLa. I'm not a beach kind of a person. Sight seeing to me is watching the cows in the pasture .....

Mother in law will turn 82 this September and she's out there on her place every single day tending to roughly 120 cows, 3 bulls and right now, a large crop of calves. She really enjoys her cattle and certainly isn't in it for the money.

Yep, everyone is paying way to much to take our culls home for stock cows.

If I was your age I would agree - however if you are over 60 and tired and beat up and have never seen this type of money before - it becomes a very different story
